Check in. Quick & easy. Hotel staff were super friendly throughout our stay. I mentioned that we were celebrating my birthday & the hotel staff generously gave us a bottle of bubbly 😊 & some balloons!! What a lovely surprise. Location Literally 60 seconds from Union Square. Perfect location for public transport, shopping, sightseeing. San Francisco is also a great city to walk & Fisherman Wharf & the Golden Gate Park are a quick bus, or morning stroll away. Also the Walking Tour and the Hop On, Hope Off busses all leave from Union Square so the Chancellor is perfectly situated. McDonald's is 3/4 minutes away, Walgreens & 7eleven are 2/3 minutes away. Right next door is an old school American diner called Sears that does great food all day. Rooms The hotel is an older building & the rooms have an older, quaint feel, but honestly they have everything you could need. They are cozy but spacious. We had a large luggage room with wardrobe, safe, spare pillows. There was also a portable heater & plug in fan should you need them. We didn't even though we visited in Jan. The bed was so comfortable, it was difficult to get out of bed in the morning! :) You can have a choice of pillows too. Our room had a large fridge that Bar / Lobby There is a bar at the lobby, (which we didn't get to try out this time), but the best part was the cookies!! They were plentiful & absolutely delicious!!! The lobby is comfortable & has Coffee, Tea, Apples, Popcorn & Cookies. We stayed at the hotel in Jan, so it was lovely to be able to grab a coffee or tea & have a chat with the hotel staff & enjoy some cookies before hitting the hay. Check out Quick & easy. Reception is staffed 24 hours

The staff was friendly and professional and very helpful. The room looked as if it had been recently refurbished and was very clean and beautifully furnished. The location was ideal within steps of Union Square and the cable car went right past the front door. It was very convenient and I felt safe, which was important as I am an older woman travelling alone. There was a strong police presence in the area, which added to the feeling of safety. There was a good variety of restaurants nearby. There were free cookies and apples and water available in the lobby. I should also mention that the amenities in the bathroom were of good quality, and I loved the "pillow menu". All in all, I was pleasantly surprised that for such a relatively reasonable price, I was able to really enjoy my stay. I highly recommend this hotel!

The bed, bedding and pillows were very high quality and provided great comfort and a good nights sleep. The bathroom had plenty of high quality amenities such as good towels, shampoo, body wash, and lotion.

The faux wood floors. I would prefer carpet.

Character of the building, friendly staff, convenient ice machine, 24/7 coffee, fruit and cookies in the lobby, library in the mezzanine level, bath tub, huge wardrobe with lots of hangers (useful as I stayed for a week), windows that open and a ceiling fan (useful as I was there for the hottest week of the year - but didn’t miss air conditioning)

We loved the old school vibe, the character - and the staff were so friendly and to a man/woman went out of their way to assist in anything we asked for help with. The location couldn't be beaten - it's almost perfect, just up from the transport hub and the tram terminus, and easily walk-able (by our standards) to places like MOMA, local eateries, Union Square etc. The bathroom and main room was clean, there was a handy walk-in room to store our bags (with bag stands to open them while standing) and the beds were comfortable - most important

The hotel itself is an older building - which can't be changed- so the rooms have some idiosyncrasies such as limited space on the wall side of the bed (where there are two), the beds in our suite were double rather than queen (space again). The toilet cistern was very noisy - for those of us who have to get up during the night and are trying to be quiet. But I must stress, these things are minor and unavoidable annoyances, and did not detract from the pleasure of the stay and the convenience of the location

-We loved our stay at The Chancellor, where we received a warm welcome and were upgraded, with champagne included, to the top of the hotel due to the fact we were on our honeymoon! -The room was so comfy, quiet, very clean, light, airy and had lots of thoughtful touches -All the staff, including the cleaners, were really pleasant -Beautiful lobby and historical hotel in an AMAZING safe location for exploring San Francisco with the BART& muni nearby as well as the Powell Hyde cable car -Although there was no coffee maker in the room, the 24hr access self-pour one in the lobby was great with lots of options including vanilla etc flavourings! -No San Francisco hotel rooms are cheap but this was amazing value for what we got in return and if we ever return to San Francisco, we’ll be back!

This is a classic luxury hotel one block from Union Square. It is cozy and comfortable. Next-door is "Sears Fine Dining" restaurant with a nice breakfast, but go early on the weekends because the lines are long. I had a room with a view of Union Square on the 10th floor. Built more that 100 years ago, the place has a nice atmosphere.

Cost. This is my favorite place in San Francisco, but it is difficult to find it available for an economical price. (I live 3 hours away by car.)

Stayed for 5 nights in May 2023 in the 12th floor. Room was spacious, clean and serviced daily. Expected noise to be an issue given cable cars running up and down but never really bothered us. Staff - reception, doormen, bartender and housekeeping- all friendly and quite helpful. Complementary coffee, cookies, popcorn, filtered water and apples available on daily basis was much appreciated. Good value for the location in Union Square close to everything. No hidden fees. Definitely will stay again.

I wish showerhead had little more water pressure, otherwise cannot fault a thing.

- the absolute best location for 5 days in SF - able to visit all the main tourist places with ease - short walk to Powell metro station and on all the main bus lines if you want to go out a bit further, right on the cable car route - very clean, great baths / shower water pressure and heated immediately - else 20 min walk to the waterfront, only a few minutes to all the huge shopping centres - fantastic huge room with thoughtful additions like a retractable clothesline, umbrella, hairdryer, safe, an entire large separate storage room - fruit and cookies available, great filtered cold water / average coffee - the staff were really helpful and helped me with late check-out and baggage storage on the last day because I had an evening flight Can't go wrong booking this place - it's actually quite a lot nicer than the booking.com profile makes it sound. I was tossing up between this and a few other dearer places which were in a less convenient location - am really glad I chose this.

- parking was quite expensive at the recommended garage and I found better rates at the SFMTA garages nearby

The hotel is simply great: it is located minutes from the Union square, and approximately 7 minutes from Moscone Conference Center. The historical building is in a good shape, and the hotel looks very clean and neat. The room is somewhat small, but still comfy and tidy. All the necessities are provided, plus they use wonderful soap, provide candy and little perks here and there. The coffee/tea station (plus water bottle refilling station) is located downstairs, they offer variety of options. Plus free cookies (2-3 varieties of freshly-baked, tasty cookies), fruits (apples only) in the lobby. Can not complain) Staff is extremely friendly and helpful. They addressed all the questions I had and went above and beyond. Plus, custodial woman that smiles all the time)) They also help you with storing your luggage until your departure, and this is secure and convenient. I should tell that not all downtown hotels offer this in such convenient way. Thank you for your hard work.

Probably two elevators sometimes is not enough - eventually you will have to wait a little bit. The city has some issues with homeless population, but this location was almost good, compared to other hotels - this has to do nothing with the hotel, just my overall feeling.
