We are writing this from the airport after being dropped off by Mariano of MadreTierra. This was the most amazing spot to stay! Mariano made us feel like family. When one of our day tours fell through on the morning of the tour, Mariano arranged a full day for us to hike in el Chaltén. It was incredible and no doubt better than the tour that didn’t work out. Abby helped us navigate reserving national park tickets online (our Spanish is very limited). And when we needed laundry done last minute, again Mariano saved the day!! The room was perfect and we slept very well. The property is located near great restaurants and the staff suggested places to eat (all were good)! Without a doubt, if you are visiting el Calafate, stay here!

No complaints!

This was a really cute place to stay for a fairly reasonable rate (not cheap because we had to pay up front, and in dollars). I'm under the impression that it's not easy to find such cozy places in El Calafate. The place felt more like a BandB because of its small scale (almost like a little house). It has a lounge, a Yoga nook, and it's kept at very comfortable temperatures. We didn't eat breakfast there, as we don't usually have large breakfasts and therefore don't want to shell out for more than we'd eat, but the food looked good. In any case we managed to find some excellent coffeeshops nearby, but I can also see why people might want to eat in-house, as it's hard to find good food in El Calafate. We didn't ask much of the staff, but the cleaning staff was quite friendly, and the front desk helped us obtain a prepaid taxi back to the airport for only a couple of extra dollars. It was very quiet and on a side street that was still very close to the main drag and to the Laguna Nimez bird reserve. I know that they can point you towards excursions as well but we'd pre-arranged things on that front and were happy with our choice.

Checkout time was awfully early (10 am) and they were inflexible about that, though they did allow us to store our suitcases. It might be more affordable to go with a hotel that doesn't require full payment up front given that the exchange rate fluctuates so much in Argentina.

The location off this gem is perfect in El Calafate - close to the main road through town with shops and restaurants, but enough away it was perhaps quieter. The hotel is staffed 24/7, which is nice as you leave your keys there and don't have to worry if you'll be too late and have to wait while someone wakes to give you the key back. Every staff person was super helpful. The breakfast was delicious, and very carefully served so as to avoid waste. Covered containers were available with single servings, so nothing sat out or spoiled or went spare. Very responsible.

This could have been user error, but our room, toward the back of the hotel, seemed to be circulationally challenged. It was stifling, but as it was summer you really couldn't leave the window open unless you wanted to be awake at 4am when the sun rose. It was warmer than normal for late November when we were there, but that is probably a trend around to stay.

Comfortable and exceptionally well-maintained facility. Genuinely friendly and helpful team. Delicious and customized breakfast includes local pastry treats, fresh meats and cheeses, yogurt and toppings, fresh juices, and coffee. Central location, being two blocks from main street or three blocks from the lake.

We only could stay one night as our flight was booked to leave the day. Next time we will spend more time here. I recommend NOT using Booking to make the reservation. Contact hotel directly.

Mariano; the owner and host, organized amazing experiences with short Notice. Too many to list; but our favorites included Kayaking, awesome El Chalten hike, Petit Perito Moreno Glacier hike( our favorite!). The restaurant Reccomendations we’re delicious! Mariano is a Local, not only a Patagonia expert but a degreed profesional that can plan trips for amateurs like us to profesional hikers! Madre Tierra is the best place to stay in El Calafate!

a small boutique property which felt more like a guest house than a hotel. 24/7 reception also convenient. Rooms were small, but perfectly comfortable and workable. A shared lounge room gave you extra space. Breakfast was great and lots of selection and fresh eggs cooked. Staff were very attentive and provided lots of information, and can help you select excursions. They also provide airport transfer options as well.

nothing to comment on

Had a wonderful stay in Madre Tierra Patagonia. The staff was amazing, very kind and attentive, and helped me with suggestions and advice. After every day tour I took from El Calafate, it was lovely to rest here, breakfast is very good too! My room was cosy and very well equipped and spotless clean, I am overall very satisfied and would have loved to stay for a longer period!

I loved the staff and how welcoming they were. They made me feel like family.

The walls are paper thin so you can hear everything. Luckily I had many late nights and early mornings. This should not deter you since the place is great and everything is just a walk away.

The stay started with a wonderful check in process- we were given a welcome drink and chatted about recommendations for the area. The room was clean and comfortable with a nice en suite- we slept well in a comfortable bed. In the morning they again helped us with recommendations and drove us to the airport for a small fee.

The personnel working there is brilliant! They do everything possible to make you feel at home including laundry service, welcome drinks everyday, a very generous breakfast and a turn down service every evening which you wouldn’t expect for this type of hotel. On top of that, Mariano, the owner, is omnipresent also helping to organize guides ahead of time and, if you’re lucky, taking you around the area himself!
