If you're looking for a no-frills, but functional stay with a warm heart, it's perfect. We really loved our stay here and would stay here again in Amsterdam. It exceeded my expectations for the low price, even the breakfast alone would have cost more than half the room if we went to a cafe. We had coffee, muesli, ham and cheese sandwiches, and fruits. It filled us up the whole day exploring the city so we ended up barely spending anything on food. The breakfast room itself overlooks the street and is decorated in a cosy, homely way. It's nice to see other guests enjoying their holiday. Staff are friendly and kind people, who think of their guests needs. We stayed with our baby daughter and she was totally welcomed, they even put up a baby cot in the room for us, and a kettle for boiling water. Although the hotel is old, and from the outside looks a little scruffy, it is a homely, welcoming place in the heart of Amsterdam. Everything in the room worked as it should: hot water, lights, fan etc. It was warm and the windows have double glazing for cold nights.
Since the cost is so low, and the general standard is high for the price, it wouldn't be fair to nitpick.

The location was great it is right next to two tram stops which can easily take you into the center and the train station. It was also right by a grocery store, convenience store and food spots like dominos pizza. The staff are also lovely, so kind and welcoming. For the price the room was pretty good and more spacious than I imagined! The hotels reception aesthetic is also just so cute and the hotel area is pretty calm and quiet.
Nothing too serious but if you have the single person rooms you have climb up and down steep stairs which for someone as un athletic as I am it was pretty annoying. For some reason in room 82 the shower does not drain so it flooded the whole bathroom floor every time I took a shower

Staff very polite and welcoming, gave me a map upon entering which was handy helping me get grips of the area, location is decent round the corner from bars clubs, coffeeshops etc, plenty of supermarkets nearby with one next door. Everything you need and would expect. Having a balcony was also great would definitely return in the future

Great location, not far from city center. Tram line 1 right in front of the hotel entrance. Close to supermarket, coffee places, restaurants. Very safe surroundings. Simple small room (single bed with private bathroom). Comfortable bed. Big enough bathroom with a shower. OK breakfast was included in the price. Very affordable price. No c
Be aware of the steep stairs to the room. My room was on the 3rd floor. It could be a challenge to climb to the room, especially with a big suitcase Nothing else to complain.

Queen's Day 1933 (24) was my first Queen's Day. April 27, 2023 (55) King's Day 2023 was my most recent. After 30 years of traveling to Amsterdam and currently visiting 3-4 times per year, I love the location: The Overtoom area is nice, a 5-minute walk to the Vondel Park, The Leidseplein (square). Plenty of food, restaurants, drinks, coffee, pastries and there is a Supermarket directly underneath the hotel. There is a Starbuck's nearby, but may I recommend STACH. Great Coffee. The tram stops in front of this property, and you may travel to many parts of the city by tram from here. Do be advised for the unexpected: Cash is NOT always King in Amsterdam. Be prepared to have and use credit cards at any time. It used to be a smoker's hotel, but I have never smelled any old wet damp, smoking smell inside. Rooms with balcony are allowed to smoke on the balcony ONLY. If you attempt to SMOKE in your room and the alarm goes off, it's 160.00 Euros and possible being booted out. The staff is TOO nice, to remind you. There is a terrace near reception that has a nice place to smoke what you like outside until 23:00 hours. Cool place to meet or run into other traveling guests. Being a bit older now, I can settle for what is practical. I don't need Royal Hotel accommodation. I don't go on holiday to stay in my room. I like and prefer this place so much, that I normally book the accommodation and then book flights to match those days. It is quite a popular place.
Hmmm, I am usually not a fan of early morning breakfast, so I go to places nearby with much larger selections. 8-10 AM is a reasonable breakfast time. Breakfast? Call it continental. Cold cuts, breads, cereal, fruit, coffee, tea, water, juices, milk, granola/musli, but due to fire safety regulations there isn't a toaster for the bread. Yeah, big disappointment. But if that was the least of my dislikes, that's good. Rooms could use some extra amenities, but of personal choice. More counter space room in the toilet for items; lotions, shower gels, etc.

As I expected, it is a basic, older hotel. It was very clean and the staff was very friendly and helpful. The continental breakfast is sufficient. The small balcony is private. Good location.
The stairs are as others have commented.

Good hotel at a great price immediately located near trams. Breakfast was ample with good available seating. I was able to see the hotel cat, which was nice. If you are willing to take a tram, this is a much less touristy area and feels more homely. Hotel is very basic especially with the shared bathroom but if you’re just looking for a comfortable room and a bathroom, this is the place.
I’m not gonna say I hated it but as everyone states, there are some seriously tall stairs and if you end up with a heavy bag like I did, it takes a little effort to get there, but it’s worth it. The provided shampoo and shower gel are a product of China and it’s obvious as they are very basic, which is why I normally bring my own. Not a complaint just a comment.

We love it! I confess that I was a little insecure when I read some comments about the hotel, so for me it exceeded expectations. The room was comfortable and even though the bathroom was shared, everything was clean. The very good location, with a beautiful view, with a TRAM station right in front, in addition to being very close to Leidseplein square. The city itself is very well organised with public transportation so it's easy to get around. And unlike some comments I read here, breakfast served us very well, with coffee, milk, bread, cheese, ham, jams, juices, cookies... we like it! The staff are very kind, they even kept our backpack after check out until it was time to leave the city. We will definitely return! Thank you, Hotel Abba. See you soon.

The place is lovely, cozy, and comfortable, but what truly stands out are the people. They are warm, friendly, and incredibly helpful. I accidentally knocked over a lamp, causing the bulb to break, but when I informed the staff, they were so understanding. They reassured me, saying, "It’s alright; things like this happen, or the world would go bankrupt!" They quickly replaced the light and made sure the area was thoroughly checked for any glass. The breakfast spread was impressive, and they even informed me about the luggage room, which I wasn’t aware of. Since my train was scheduled for the evening, I was able to store my luggage there and enjoy my day without any worries. Plus, they have delicious cookies and toffees available to snack on, which was a delightful touch.
There was absolutely nothing to not like!

The place is the meaning of great cost benefit. Sttafs are really friendy. The room is good and has everything that you need. The location its excellent!!!!
The stairs are crazyyy and we stayed in the last floor, but I know its something common in Netherlands. It all depends who you will share the toilet, in the first nights we shared the toilet with a family and it was very smooth. In the last days we shared the toilet with a guy that was enjoying the best that Amsterdam Coffeshops can offer... so you can imagine the situation.
