We had a very pleasant stay at Alcala. The manager helped up with luggage as we had not expected stairs. The room was spacious and warm, the beds comfortable. There was a good-sized kitchen area and a free laundry with washer and dryer. It was a pleasant, though much longer than expected walk to the closest shops. Free off street parking. There were plenty of local places to visit including the botanic gardens, the eco sanctuary and a very pleasant drive to the Chinese Gardens.

Possibly the worst showers we experienced in NZ. It was a climb in bath (which isn't easy if you have any ambulatory issues}. The shower is so low down and fixed to the wall, that for any one even close to 6' tall would have no hope of getting under it. The water pressure was slow and the shower hard to work out.

The friendly staff were great. Had a comfortable evening - the beds were comfy. I drew attention to some items that needed work and they immediately tasked it out. Impressed. I'll happy stay here again.

The small bar fridge was broken, and so was one of the electric blanket switches. BUT.... I notified them of that, and they were grateful. Other than that, I liked it all. I'll happily stay here again. One other thing I remembered.... when booking through booking.com, we saw that there was a spa pool we could use. We were really looking forward to using it, but it was broken and no longer available. I brought that up with management who advised that most references to it were removed online, but a few have snuck through. Not a deal breaker, but certainly disappointing. Again though, we'd certainly still stay again..

Wonderful building, Spanish style, great location-10 minutes from shops and The Octagon. Lovely one bedroom apartment, very comfortable and clean. Great nights sleep, bed was a little firm which suited us! Plenty of kitchenware if you chose to self cater and breakfast bar to eat at. Full size cooker, microwave fridge. Breakfast was available to order the night before, Continental and/or cooked. We had continental, choice of juices, cereals, yogurt,fruit and toast plus tea or coffee. Good Free Wifi too. We were on the ground floor, some rooms were on first floor, could have been tricky with luggage and elderly folk. Great friendly staff in reception. Plenty of on site parking.

Shower pressure could have been a little stronger but we came out clean so…..!!!

Got upgraded to a 1 bedroom apartment on check in which was very thoughtful as then I didn’t have to sleep with one of my children in the queen bed in the studio I had booked as was what was available at the time of one line support. This motel is an 80’s oldie but a goodie. Very clean, good space ( love 80 design) and walking distance to the museum, uni, and eateries,/tskeaways. Which we walked too . Night and day across the road is very handy. The Cooked Breakfast and paper ordered for the morning was easy to arrange. And was tasty. Would recommend staying.

A little dark in the lounge but kitchen light was good

Clean room, bath tub a bit worn out, beds were comfortable, total stay in room is great. Housekeeping servicing room everyday which is a bonus. Downfall would be the use of laundry, as we couldn't do laundry in the morning,bonus, free use of laundry. Otherwise, i'd come back and stay here for future stays. Very central to the University, shop right across the road. Eatery down the corner, what more can you ask for.

If laundry hours could be in the morning would be great.

Nice big spacious room and very comfortable beds. Good lighting, privacy, bathroom and kitchen facilities. Right next to a convenience store and just around the corner from a nice cafe and the university and a short walk to Forsyth Barr stadium. I also walked home from the Octagon after a few drinks so great location overall.

Had a small incident with the hot water cylinder failing but the owner as quick as a flash moved me into another room and no harm done. Handled very well I think. Decor is quite dated but that kinda added to the charm.

It was roomy, warm, clean and comfortable, even if a little older in the styling. Perfect for a larger family and offering good value for money. Heaps of power outlets. Servicing of the room was good, replenishing the used condiments etc. The 24-hour Night&Day convenience store over the road was very handy! Didn’t find too big an issue with water pressure as others had mentioned - we were in the middle level (one storey up).

Just a few little very minor things like no lock on the bathroom, the dodgily-designed stairs to the attic room weren’t exactly high on safety, and my sons bedding on the spare (lounge) bed were just smaller blankets that kept falling off during the night. This bed was also on wheels so when he tried sitting up in it, it would roll away from the wall. A dish-rack would have been good - on check out we were told we were apparently supposed to get an extra tea-towel. (That way we’d have one to put wet dishes on and one to dry with). We tried to cook pancakes but there wasn’t a suitable pan. All just minor things but nothing that ruined our stay by any means. We’d happily stay here again, and would recommend for others.

Microwave was not able to be used there seemed to be bits and pieces all stored inside it and it was dirty (unit 10) We found the parking very tight and damaged our car trying to get past cars parked in the entrance way scraping the low wall as we tried to get out - had to park over the road by the dairy on the second night as one car park was taken up by a boat so nowhere to park on-site

Staff are very welcoming, super helpful and generally great.

The rooms at this hotel are quite dated and tired. Everything is clean, but the shower (for example) is in a mini-bath surround and the nozzle is at chest height for tall people. The bathrooms really need an upgrade. To be fair, the price does reflect the age of the rooms, but it is just getting to the point of really needing something done.

The room is very spacious, and the loft is quite interesting; the children really enjoy sleeping up there. The room is well-equipped, and it is very convenient to use. The surrounding environment is very beautiful and peaceful, and it is truly a delightful experience to be awakened every morning by the sound of seagulls squabbling. We were greeted by a very nice old gentleman.
