This is a 'boutique hotel' in the middle of things off Somerset Road. It has a Moroccan flavour with tight staircases and flamboyant Morooccan tiles, everywhere. Like most of the buildings in the area you feel slightly hemmed in, but the hotel is finished to a high standard, was very clean and the bed was huge. Shower was amazing. What was really fantastic was the pool bar on top of the roof. Where you could swim and have tasty snacks and order cocktails. Later we went down to the piano bar which was cosy and fun. Although the pianist was a bit too hectic for our liking.

There was no coffee or kettle in the the room and no trimmings like a gown, but there was a well-stocked mini bar. There was no phone in the room either. We live near to the hotel and we basically needed a place to stay overnight as our grown up kids were having a massive party at our house. In that regard we had a fantastic overnight stay.

It’s a lovely boutique hotel, it’s very comfortable, it’s extremely friendly and the staff are all absolutely brilliant, it’s like your own family running the place. It’s not The Ritz 5 🌟 but it’s far more enjoyable. Great location, very safe area to walk around, the adjoining Piano bar is simply awesome, restaurants and bars and a shopping mall 30 yards away, my wife and I loved this place and we travel a lot. Breakfast is good in a slightly limited way, but it’s absolutely fine and very pleasant. Will absolutely return here and be very excited about meeting the truly lovable staff who run this very unique hotel.

We had to leave.

This was my second visit to The Grey and I just love it there. Its really quaint, quiet with just enough bustle at reception from time to time. The location is exceptional, with no loadshedding it is near some bars, cafes, restaurants and really central. The Piano Bar nextdoor is amazing for a quick bite, some music or just a glass of wine (the tapas are outstanding!) I've stayed in a bigger room with terrace before and this time a smaller room, but both stays were comfortable - beds are a really good size and the showers are nice and hot. Really good stay.

Liked everything!

Honestly, everything was pretty much perfect, truly. But, the staff wins the show for The Grey hotel. We stayed for a week, and we were so looked after with warmth and friendliness, it was hard to leave the wonderful people we spent the week with. My husband and I worked remote for a week. TIP: If you do this, consider getting a room with the private balcony, you get a desk in there and it's easy to have private video calls for work, your all plugged in. Our room was super comfortable, great hair dryer (if it's important to you, this is a small bonus). Lot's of places to plug in to charge phones, laptops. The location is amazing, you are surrounded by wonderful restaurants with in a minute or two of walking, walking distance to the V&A, you can run (I felt safe, although perhaps it was naive, but I ran to the V&A then to the boardwalk in Seapoint so it's a great location if your a runner as well. Ubers were plentiful. There is also a small shopping mall with several coffee places, a grocery store, a place to buy a SIM if you need it, an ATM. There is even a very small pool on the roof, and as small as it is, I annoyed the staff by swimming back and forth for 45 minutes but I still got a wee swim in which was great. We had coffee in the reception every-morning and the gentlemen serving breakfast and coffee were a joy to spend the morning with. The neighborhood itself is sweet, on the edge of Bo Kaap, it does house many expensive houses that carry the colors of Bo Kaap but are homes to wealthy people so, it's feels safer (although, always be aware). If I were to return, with out a doubt, I'd stay here over and over again.

leaving!

Location was great and safe. Great vibe from the hotel. Precious from the hotel was AMAZING! She went above and beyond to orient us. She also brought a pair of pants that were torn to the tailor to be fixed. She was great and really gave us good energy. She also helped us pick the right size room. Really cute hotel.

One staff member (forgot her name) came across as nice but never really came thru. She never came back with some change (close to $1 but still its the principal), she never followed thru with our concern about the room fridge not being on (I eventually figured out it was disconnected) and she had closed the main door and I couldn't the hotel property (I called, I texted, but she never answered) - she apologized but it was a good 20 minutes waiting outside just to be able to enter the room. But other than her - everyone else was wonderful. Precious was AMAZING!!!!!

The location is perfect - right in the heart of De Waterkant. The breakfast was superb - there was a full menu with some truly delicious options. The room was nicely decorated and the bathroom included some really nice smelling shampoo and shower gel. The bed was comfy and overall it was a great stay.

Our room was a little noisy as it was right next to the stairs to the bar. Also, the windows in our room were screwed shut. This meant it was impossible to ventilate and get some fresh air.

Absolutely fantastic hotel! Couldn't have asked for more. From the exceptional staff, to the superb location. It really did exceed my expectations. Big thanks to Precious, Stanley and the rest of the team who were incredibly helpful and great hosts. In terms of facilities, there's a super rooftop bar, the Skybar, with a wonderful view of Table Mountain looming in the background. There is also a pool, which unfortunately I didn't have the time to use, but it's more of a lounging, dipping pool to cool off after a hard day of sightseeing. The on site restaurant, The Piano Bar, I heard was also very good, but again, I didn't have a chance to eat there. The breakfasts were great though. Location wise, The Grey and De Waterkant area is ideally situated for the V&A, CBD and Bo Kaap. There are several good restaurants and bars in the neighbourhood and it's perfectly safe to walk around in the evening. As with any big city, use common sense. The nearby Cape Quarter is a mall with cafes, grocery stores, souvenir shops and a host of other shops. Literally 2 minutes around the corner from the hotel. Would definitely recommend The Grey and would certainly stay there again. Thanks for making my stay a warm and welcome one!

Really there was nothing to not like about the place. If I had one suggestion to make, which I think someone else mentioned in a previous review, it would be kettles and coffee / tea in the rooms.

I loved the location and look and feel of The Grey Hotel. It is a beautiful little boutique hotel where you can enjoy some privacy as well as meet new people on the rooftop terrace. My room was under the Skybar which didn't disturb me. The staff was very kind and the manager of the hotel very approachable and friendly. The Greenpoint neighborhood is a definitive plus. You feel safe here and can discover your surroundings by foot. Nevertheless travelling alone as a female you should use uber / taxi to go further around in the city.

The bathroom door in my room was slightly broken and needs to be fixed. Other than that I was very happy with my stay.

The hotel was beautiful, the staff friendly and very helpful. We really enjoyed having a drink at the sky bar with the spectacular view of Table Mountain. Dinner at the Piano Bar was also excellent and the atmosphere with the live music was really special. The bed was really comfortable and the room was spotless every day. Overall we really enjoyed our stay and would chose the Grey Hotel again.

Only complaint was that the room was facing the road and the piano bar so it could get quite loud in the evenings but most of the times we were so tired from the day's activities that we fell asleep in spite of the loud music.

The location was fantastic. An easy walk to the water front and plenty of restaurant choices close by. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble. We loved the roof top bar with a great view of Table Mountain. Excellent bar food. We would definitely stay here again. The bed was super comfy, and the room was mostly quiet.
