Less than a minute from the A38 (Exeter - Plymouth), the hotel is conveniently situated near a quiet village. Check-in was over in a matter of minutes and we were able to get into our room, unpack, have a drink (and a meal if we had wanted one) at the bar, and a nice comfy bed ensured we got a good night's sleep. A freshly cooked delicious full English in the morning and we continued the long journey to Cornwall refreshed and replenished!

A couple of signs pointing motorists to the A38 (Plymouth = via the filling station, Exeter = turn left out of the hotel, then right over the bridge) would stop dummies like me from thinking they can simply go back the way they came ... it took us 20 minutes to find the right road! But...OK, that is not the hotel's responsibility.

The room was cool perfect for this hot weather. The bathroom was clean and the shower, working brilliantly. Breakfast was good, dinner, had a good range for different appetites and tastes. At reception they welcomed us and dealt with us straight away. Information was available in our room about food, prices and nearby locations. Ok, it's not in Exeter town centre but it made up for the location with beautiful rolling hills (see photo below)and access to main routes. Also, I liked the pillows. I have ordered 4 of the same with the same protectors!

The room - clean throughout and bed comfortable. The flow of water from shower was good. Information about facilities in room was helpful. I did not have dinner but did ask for cheese and biscuits, which I took back to my room to eat. Good price and plentiful cheese/biscuits at a reasonable price too. Breakfast (had master English breakfast) which was really tasty and hot. Service in the restaurant was excellent. Ample free parking. Reception staff friendly and was greeted with a warm welcome and smile. Check in and out was quick and efficient.

The only tiny thing was the numbering of the rooms in Ashcombe block - I didn't see any numbering so went the long way round to my room number. The room numbers might have been on display just not clearly enough for me to spot first time. Otherwise I could not fault anything during my stay.

We were able to book the room we prefer which is really quiet. reception staff excellent and restaurant staff on Friday and Saturday really helpful. parking close to room really convenient and no stairs. Breakfasts and meals on Friday and Saturday excellent.

It all went wrong on Sunday evening as when we went in for a meal we were given a menu that had only 4 dishes on it, roasts or cod dish, My husband doesn't eat these so we asked if he could have a burger, was told no, only the items on the menu. we had not been informed that it was a limited menu that night and was not able to order a takeaway as no delivery service to hotel. Ended up having sandwiches from the garage, as luckily they had some left. Not a good mothers day meal!!

Firstly the hotel allowed me a slightly later check in due to work commitments spilling over, On arrival the greeting from a South African lady was welcoming, furthermore on the end of her shift (11pm ish) there was an issue with the entry card resulting in a quick change of batteries, she had not been in this situation before but handled it like a true pro, Very impressive !! (one of those things). Room was comfortable but couldn't adjust heating ? maybe on a timer but otherwise great. Great service at breakfast and perfect location for work the next day.

Got some take out beers that were pretty pricey, but to be expected i guess. no other options at 10.30/11pm.

Having outside motel accommodation is good when you are in and out as you don’t have to go through the hotel each time. Accommodation was clean and comfortable

The bedrooms lacked the option of decaf tea or coffee which was disappointing. Had a meal in the restaurant but the waiter didn’t really have a clue about allergens. My wife has a dairy allergy but they really didn’t know whether their food contained milk or not. This limited the selection to one. There was no offer of adapting the food to make it dairy free. (probably prepared frozen meals rather than made fresh!). Despite trying to choose items off the menu which shouldn’t have dairy, my wife was not too well through the night and in the morning meaning we missed breakfast.

The Shaldon Suite is beautiful! A little private building on it’s own. It’s plush with plenty of space, a huge bed, a sofa and other chairs. The bathroom is spacious and even has coloured lighting. The bath is a jacuzzi bath. The carpet is thick and soft. Really lovely room. Quick and friendly welcome to get a few electronic keys. Staff very welcoming throughout and happily changed money at bar for a taxi after some reasonably priced drinks bought.

Breakfast was a let down. Bland English breakfast. No other options than fruit chopped up (bog standard melon and apple etc) or cereal. No pastries or pancakes on offer. It was all very commercial. Shame as the room was luxurious and breakfast anything but. Again staff very helpful and efficient.

We had asked for a twin and were upgraded to a double/single which was perfect for us as my husband has Parkinson’s and moves about a lot in bed. Dinner in the bar was very good and value for money. As this was our first visit since C-19 (we had many before) we knew the breakfast was going to be excellent and we were not disappointed. The staff were very good and it was lovely that, although it had been 4 years, the exceptional restaurant manager, Raj, remembered us. We’ll be back soon from Eastbourne.

Although the room was slightly smaller than those of the big hotel chains it was very well equipped, with iron and ironing board, a nice bathroom and even biscuits with the hospitality tray. The bed was comfortable and I slept well. The wi-fi worked very well. The breakfast was good and there was no problem doing me a veggie breakfast. Being able to park the car right outside the room made it handy for loading and unloading the suitcase/bags. Friendly, helpful staff. It was a very reasonable price and I would certainly recommend it to friends.

I got to the hotel just before 11 at night and the lady on reception was very helpful and engaging, the room was clean and tidy , the shower water pressure was Amazing, the staff at breakfast were very polite and the food was better than expected , I will definitely recommend them and stay there again , 10/10

WiFi didn't work but that was the only thing and if I would have asked I'm sure they would have sorted it , not even sure if I was doing something wrong
