Our room was fantastic with 4 windows (some with window seats), good views, a giant bed and a giant bathroom. It was all really clean and comfortable. The in-house gin distillery was a good bonus and we enjoyed the tasting.
We had booked a table for dinner on the Saturday night, but the atmosphere in the dining room was dreadful - the dining room had become a spillover from the bar, so people (lots of young locals) were pulling chairs around dining tables, drinking pints and being really rowdy. It was not pleasant to eat there, even though the food was lovely. In fact, the dining room atmosphere ruined the experience

The staff were excellent, couldn't do enough for me. The room didn't have a hairdryer but the lady at breakfast sorted it quickly. The room was a good temperature (I normally find hotels too warm). I had a really good evening meal with a colleague who lived locally. I ordered a breakfast bag to go as I had to leave early and that was very good.
My only difficulty was finding the car park as the signage is behind you as you drive up a steep drive with a hairpin bend, it wasn't very clear and arriving in the dark I had to park on the hill and get out to find my bearings.

An elegant and characterful building. Its clearly going through a period of refurbishlment so parts of the building look a bit tired but look beyond that and you'll see beautiful period detailing in the bedrooms and shared spaces making it so much more interesting than some of the bland, modern chain hotels. The owners should be applauded for investing in retaining those features. My bedroom was much larger than average (though I know some are smaller) and with a large, modernised bathroom. The terrace accessed from the bar provided superb views of the surrounding countryside. The staff were welcoming, polite and friendly - mostly younger folk who took pride in their job which was refreshing.
More relaxed seating and subdued lighting in the inside bar would make it feel more welcoming

Lovely hotel and friendly helpful staff. Slowly being returned to its former glory. Depending on which room, there are fantastic views over the town and surrounding countryside. Gorgeous plaster friezework around dining room (particularly the small part.of the room) unfortunately in need of some renovation, but good to see the character of the building retained.
Previous years of neglect have made their mark, and will take time and money to rectify. Rooms are very warm, although windows can be opened a small way. Some carpets could do with a good clean. Grounds and gardens could be improved, but secondary to restoring the building.

Beautiful bedroom with ensuite. Thoughtfully decorated. VERY comfortable bed and luxurious "shabby-chic" in a very good way. Genuinely lovely. Exceptionally helpful, friendly, welcoming staff, who went out of their way to offer a great stay. In hot weather, a problem because the windows don't open very far (just inches due to "Health & Safety gone mad" authorities), but this is not the fault of the hotel and they provided a fan, which did the job. Lovely landing and staircase with chandeliers. If we had stayed longer, which we could happily have done if time had allowed, it would have been nice to sit out on the terrace with a coffee. We could see the castle ruins from the window, and there was ample parking space. The nicest hotel we've been in for some time. Highly rcommended if you would like somewhere very friendly and relaxed, with the scent of the sea in the air from not far away.
As in my part of the review, above, authorities disallow the big windows to open very much (not the fault of the hotel). If you are staying in hot weather, check that the hotel have a fan for the room. They quickly provided us with one, which was really great service.

Bar & restaurant for dinner and breakfast was fantastic. Food was very yummy and their own house summer gin delicious. Perfect views at the rear of the building. The staff were so helpful and friendly. Fantastic little building in an excellent location for exploring Cornwall and devon. Bedroom was basic but comfortable and clean. Would happily stay again.
No cornish cider available in the bar; not that we could see on tap or bottle anyway. Parking was full when we arrived so had to use the pay & display for a short time and then moved the car later.

Simple check-in process. Helpful, friendly staff. Brilliant breakfast included- lots of options. Great location, next to the castle and close to the town centre. Small single room was fully equipped and toiletries/tea & coffee provided. TV simple to use. Great shower. Plenty of sockets. Thank you for allowing me to use the car park, after I had checked out for the day.
The radiator did not work (luckily there was a blanket in the room). A heated towel rail in the bathroom would have been ideal.

Perfect. Beautiful, listed building. Full of unique period features. Great views from bar and dining room. Lovely bedroom, equipped with all facilities. Bed so comfortable - slept well. Ate in Dining Room first night - food superb. Staff a credit to the owners - friendly and helpful. So impressed with their own gin I took some home with me. Close to town Centre and venue we were going to on the Saturday night. Look forward to staying again next year.

Beautiful room, really comfortable and cosy, clean and the bed very comfortable. Staff were friendly, in the heart of the town and very accessible.
Our rooms door unfortunately looked slightly cheap, only had a really fragile lock so didn’t really feel “safe” - not literally but I’m sure you know what I mean, we had a massive gap too at the bottom of the door. - doors could do with updating and just made to feel more secure.

The room was fine.Staff were helpful. Bed was exceptionally comfortable and en-suite was modern and well appointed. Dinner was good and cooked breakfast excellent. Location is fantastic for exploring the local area and beyond.
Although the young staff were all very helpful and friendly, we felt they perhaps needed some more training or guidance in the nuances of hospitality (eg ensuring the breakfast buffet area was always topped up with things like condiments, juices etc to save customers from having to constantly ask). Although we loved the charm and character of the hotel, some of the rooms could do with refreshing (paint, curtains etc)
