The staff were exceptional and so kind and pleasant, the bedroom was immaculate and the comfiest bed with gorgeous en-suite.

Every meal we had at the hotel in various restaurants was cold, this wasn’t just an issue we had but was also vocalised by other guests. The spa was not tidy, towels and robes and plastic bottles were abandoned in the spa, there was no one on duty making sure it was clean and tidy. The bedroom became really cold at night and the heating did not work, none of the radiators in the whole hotel were turned on. The hotel does not serve food at any restaurant past 8.30pm, not even bar snacks on an evening so if you miss last reservations you will be starving until morning. The tv remote in our room did not work and they are not smart TVs so no Netflix or YouTube are available. No WiFi or signal throughout the whole property.

The location. The room. The spa facilities.

Breakfast experience was a total let down. Staff unattentive. My wife was given the wrong first course. I had to chase up my first course. We asked for a mix of toast butcwere given all granary toast. Staff were not easy to find.

From the moment we drove through the gates of Maften Hall we knew we were in for a treat. I booked our stay for one night for my partner and I's anniversary and the staff made it special immediately. They have valet parking, complimentary drinks on arrival and champagne and chocolates in our room waiting for us. The spa is small but has everything you need including a pool, jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and aromatherapy room. We had dinner at The Keepers which was affordable but delicious. Both of us would absolutely go back and can't wait for next time!

We didn't really need a balcony room as the weather was chilly but there was a lovely view of the church. Draws hadn't been fully emptied from the previous guest but as soon as we told reception they came and removed the items and apologised profusely!

We had a fantastic mini moon here for the weekend following our wedding. It is absolutely beautiful. Inside it's a wonderful mix of old and modern. We were met by 2 lovely staff members, John (who got us welcome drinks and a mab who sadly we didn't catch his name but he had fair hair, glasses and showed us to our room. Both were so welcoming and pleasant throughout our stay. We both enjoyed our daily chats with John. The rooms were beautiful and clean. The bathroom was amazing with a massive bath. We only ate at the new Keepers restaurant which was whilst still beautiful a more relaxed setting. The food was incredibly good quality for the price and delicious. There's a lovely town around 5 miles away with lots of cafes and independent shops.

The only slight negative was the room was boiling for September (even with the fan on). We couldn't see a way to turn the underfloor heating down. This in no way affected our stay and I have no doubt had we raised it to staff, it would have been rectified. It also made me desperately want to return and stay during winter months.

Room is superb but not to the value paid. Restaurants lacking in organisational aspect of waiting too log for courses although the serving staff are all excellent and it is not their fault. Lack of induction to the serving staff. Butter delivered but no bread or some other perfectly simple routine that needs sorting. I like the ambient of all the restaurant, excellent table setting and cleanliness. A little twigging would get it spot on. Breakfast choices is excellent. Dinner choices a little limited.

Waiting between courses. Having to ask for items after room service such as more milk, or a particular tea. However, the cleaning is very good. Not much else that I don't like.

We always love the ambience and beauty of Matfen Hall! The rooms are beautiful and clean and the spa is relaxing too! We love the food offerings and just always go home feeling rested and refreshed and wanting to return! The staff make this place. So attentive, I don’t think I’ve ever been told no!

The restaurant options are limited for daytime eating and evening eating. With cloisters closing at 8.30 and the only other dining a fine dining tasting menu it can be tricky to plan your day! But the food is always delicious! A variation in the Cloisters day and evening menu would be lovely as we have visited a few times now and it hasn’t ever changed its limited offerings.

The room , location and staff were exceptional.

we wanted a bath and the water wasn't hot it was luke warm at best which was a shame. Also the food wasn't as good as we expected. the choice seemed a little limited however it was nice. The breakfast can only be described as a bit of a debacle - some people waited an age to be served and some were served immediately there seemed to be no pattern or system to serve those who came in first. When it arrived there was some items missing from the plate such as hash browns. This wasn't a big issue but it reflected badly on the restaurant and the overall dining experience.

An utterly delightful experience, end to end. The reception and porter staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, and we were welcomed in with a welcome drink and a personal consultation with the receptionist where we picked our dining and activity times. The building itself was simply glorious and finished to an incredibly high standard. Original features were immaculate and the modern touches very well incorporated - the overall visual effect is stunning. The room (comfort) was huge and the bed/bedding extremely comfortable and luxurious. A turn down service while we were at dinner was a lovely touch. The food at Cloisters was very good too - the flat iron steak was particularly good. Breakfast was very generous and we stayed for an afternoon tea in the morning room which was quite simply stunning. An amazing treat of a trip, we'll definitely come back and have already been recommending it to friends. Bravo.

The only small downside is that the spa area could do with a refresh. The sauna was lovely and pool very pleasant, but the 2 steam rooms needed a thorough clean (smelt a bit damp and mouldy) and the men's changing rooms updating. We didn't choose the hotel for the spa though - and the waiting area, robes and free water were all a great touch, but if I'd paid for a day lounging in the pool and in the thermal facilities I'd have been a bit disappointed as everything else was such a high standard.

Absolutely loved the staff welcome, the fact our luggage was taken straight up to our room while we got a comfortable seat and a drink to chill out after a drive there in the snow. The decor is stunning. Our room was spacious and had everything we needed apart from milk but this was delivered straight away when we asked. The pool is at just a nice temperature and the right size. The food was delicious and there was enough for us.

Just a personal thing but I still like a booklet in my room providing details such as history, information on facilities etc.
