Breakfast was excellent, we ate there in the evenings as well, which was also excellent, and just as well because there were no other eating establishments for quite a few miles. The room was a good size and comfortable. Staff were friendly and efficient. We enjoyed our stay. Lovely view across countryside.
The bathroom fittings were a little bit tired and outdated, although perfectly functional. Although the room was generally clean, one of the bedside light bulbs was really dusty, and inside the drawers could have done with a wipe round as well.

Stayed two nights and had a lovely time. Really liked the Inn, staff were very friendly, everywhere was very clean and our room was really cosy and had a wonderful view. The beds were very comfortable, plenty of pillows and cushions. Tea making facilities, bottled water, hair dryer, straighteners even, little bottles of shampoo and body wash, really fluffy towels and a toweling robe in the wardrobe. Food/menu was great, we didn't have to wait long for the meal to arrive, the portions were large and I couldn't eat it all and the chips weren't nice at all, but apart from that I would certainly return. The bar in the evening was really welcoming and dog friendly.
The chips.

Check-in was straightforward. We were taken to room, which was bigger than expected, and had both welcome tray & dressing gowns. Free wi-fi worked well; both in room & in bar/restaurant. Breakfast was so good, we booked for an evening meal too; which we also thoroughly enjoyed. Lovely quiet countryside location, but within easy reach of main routes: 1 mile to A68, and only 6 miles to A69. We definitely plan to return.
Would have preferred a walk in shower rather than shower over bath, as my husband is over 6ft tall, so headroom was tight. But not a major issue, that would stop us staying again; we just know to request that option!

Very comfortable bed. Large room with plenty of space. Was clean. Ideal location. Nice breakfast. Good value for money.
Stains on ceiling where water has obviously come in needs painting over. Very tiny sink in bathroom with no plug so difficult to use to wash in. Food in restaurant looked very nice but couldn't eat there as little or no vegan options which was a shame as my partner did like the look of the pies. Maybe a vegan pie option could be added.

Firstly, the location is spectacular, with far-reaching views over some stunning countryside. The room I was in [Castle] was large, modern with king-size bed. Very comfortable with high quality bedding. The shower room was modern clean with great pressure walk in shower. Then we get to the food and bar, I can not tell you how good the food is. With a variety of home made pies and the best chips I have ever had. The selection of beers was endless and atmosphere in the bar was perfect. A brilliant place. I would definitely stay again.
Leaving.

Very nice pub with comfortable room. Evening meal was very good, and portions were large. Breakfast was served quickly and was exactly to our requirements. The need to log in our car for the car park was well signposted and staff reminded us when we checked in. Great views from our room, Dere Street.
Only one small point, the washbasin in the bathroom in Dere Street room was very small. Bathroom is big so would have thought a bigger washbasin could have been installed. Not an issue, just a comment.

Really nice room with comfortable beds, and no noise from other rooms, even though most were occupied. A very friendly welcome from a young lady in the bar who helped my husband carry up our suitcases to our room.
The breakfast was in the very cold bar - a smaller room which could have been heated, or more heat in the large bar, would have made the experience much more pleasant. The breakfast was OK, but my smoked salmon with srambled eggs was not the best - it came as a pile of scrambled eggs with tiny bits of cooked smoked salmon stirred in, and slightly burnt toast on the side. It was a very windy night, and there was a loud whistle all through the night coming from the tightly closed window in our room (Castle).

It was the second time staying at the anchor inn whittonstall snow on the ground the anchor looked like a Christmas card on arrival the owner couldn't be more helpful The room was ready for us we went down to the bar sat in front of the fire and enjoyed the ambience we have eaten at the restaurant on our last visit and the food is excellent and this time it was just as good table staff excellent couldn't be more helpful we stayed for two nights the bus service to Hexham on the Saturday is brilliant the bus pick's you up outside the pub and drops you off right outside on return also the breakfast at the anchor is probably the best we have had on a weekend break the girls doing the breakfast service are top class as are the owner's and the bar staff. many thanks Kevin and Theresa
Nothing not to like great people and great pub

In the room, almost every need had been anticipated. The staff were friendly and helpful. The meals were first class. Car parking was free and convenient. For me the location was great; out in the country with stunning views.
At breakfast, with a whole dining room available, my place had been set with almost no separation from a table of four blokes. I'm sure they were great guys, but I didnt know them. As a solo traveller, I would have preferred more private space.

Brilliant 3 night stay for New Year Room lovely, spotlessly clean. Extremely comfortable King size bed, beautiful bed linen , towels and dressing gowns. ( wee issue with radiator thermostat we were roasted @ 31degs so got the manager to turn it off completely this didn’t change our rating in the slightest) Restaurant & Bar just perfect as was the exceptional food, fantastic menu , so much to choose from. Thank you so much to Dan & the team for a lovely stay to celebrate New Year Anne-Marie & Davy ( Edinburgh)
