The Orange Village Hostel exceeded my expectations - the room was very clean, the kitchen facilities were extensive and clean, the breakfast was good, the clientele was diverse and interesting, and the whole place felt clean and safe. Lots of charging stations all over for your devices, solid wifi throughout the facility, very helpful staff, and located within walking distance of great restaurants and public transportation throughout the city.
Yes, the neighborhood is rough. There is homelessness and open drug use in places but I never had a negative interaction with anyone. I ignored them and they ignored me. Plenty of families and tourists walking around in this area, other big hotels, etc. The key is to go out during the day, have your fun, and then come home at a reasonable hour - I can't tell you how safe it is in the middle of the night but guess that things get a little crazier and weirder the later it gets.

This was amazing value for money. My friends and I split a three-bed room for two nights and paid not much more than $USD70 each. The room itself was spacious, clean, and amply-stocked - it even had a fridge and microwave - and the location was perfect for seeing San Francisco.
Right on the border of the Tenderloin, which is a very hellish and sad place, a testament to the disgraceful inequality of American society. Worth seeing, I suppose, to see what a fraud the American dream really is; but generally best to avoid. Thankfully, the hostel is not really *in* the Tenderloin, just next to it, so it can be avoided. There are homeless people around but this is pretty standard in American cities, especially California, where society doesn't really exist and people are just abandoned to the streets.

The location was was great! I know they say there are a lot of homeless and it’s somewhat in a sketchy area (it’s true), but it is tolerable and the public transportation is so close to the hostel. The hostel didn’t have a/c, thankfully the room provided a small fan. I would stay here again during the fall or winter! I wouldn’t recommend it during the hot summers. I got lucky that during my stay the night was chill. Overall, the beds are fairly comfy! Breakfast was ok; cereal, waffles, toast. It was nice having an additional bathroom outside in the hall way.
It would have been nice if the hostel’s bathroom had soap to wash your hands. There was no a/c. No water station; you only had access to water during their breakfast hours or kitchen hours. Fair warning-you get a tiny towel to use during your stay- if you want a regular size towel, you need to pay extra.

Everything was really good. The room was actually quiter than I would expect, given the other guests and the fact it's a hostel (we stayed in a private queen bed room with ensuite bathroom). The room was on the corner of the building so it sometimes might have been noisy from the street, but again, much less that I would expect. Everything was clean when we arrived, bathroom- good size, hot water took a while to start running but nothing out of normal. Bed comfortable, there was a desk with a mirror, fridge and microwave. Very good price for this central location and the amenities. Breakfast was basic but ok: cereals, milk, coffee, tea, juice, waffles, fruit and yogurt, bread and jam. There is, of course, the kitchen available if you need to cook.

The place has a good location. The kitchen is perfect for cooking. The free breakfast is delicious, especially the coffee. I met nice people: other travelers. The Internet works well and there are spaces to work. In general I recommend it.
My room stank of cannabis (maybe they smoked a moment ago or the floor just stank). That is a great irresponsibility of the person. I'm allergic, I just recovered from the flu and I like places where you can't smoke. And there are places to smoke, not in the room. And the staff changed my room. I know it doesn't depend on the place but it is each person's responsibility. And the staff changed my room. The workers were friendly and professional. The location is good but you also have to be careful, there are many homeless people on the street, you have to be careful with that.

It was really clean, the Employees were really friendly and helpful. There were enough bathrooms which were also clean and there was enough warm water. The location is perfect, close to union square. There is also breakfast included, one can use the kitchen to their likes and store in the fridge there. But the rooms also have a small fridge which i like a lot (cold water on warm days!) there is a sink in the room and lockable storage options (you need to bring ur own lock). Beds were comfortable.
Nothing, everything was perfectly fine!

Great but simple free breakfast (fresh waffles, bread, jams, Nutella, peanut butter, bananas, yoghurts, cereals) Good value for money Plenty of secure storage space in room (1 big locker each, plus 1 underbed storage unit each). Got given a free upgrade to private bathroom Laundry facilities on site ($3 wash, $1.50 dryer) Central location Hostel organised activities to make friends
Upper bunkbed a bit squeaky Be aware there is No shower gel / shampoo (but not an issue, as it is a hostel so did not expect it anyway)

budget-friendly accommodation with a vibrant atmosphere. The hostel's central location makes it convenient for exploring the city's attractions. The staff is friendly and welcoming, creating a comfortable environment for guests. The communal spaces are well-maintained and provide opportunities for socializing with fellow travelers. Overall, Orange Village Hostel is a suitable choice for budget-conscious travelers looking for a lively and well-located place to stay in San Francisco. ps, while the area has alot of homeless and seems like unsafe, people wont bother you and approach you. Imagine Malate, Makati & Baguio combined thats the vibe of the area.
none that i can think of, i didnt expect it really that astonishing, my room was clean and decent. Value for money for the location. PLUS the breakfast is superb for price per night! Would really recommend this place than Amsterdam which offers the same rate but without breakfast.

We were really surprised how quiet the room was. we stayed in a three bed-room as a family of three on the third floor. The room had an okay size, we had our own bathroom and everything was clean! There was a fridge and a microwave in the room. Towels and bedding were included. The breakfast was great and offered a good variety (Toast, waffles, yoghurt, fruits, cereals and much more). The location is in the heart of the city close to union square, which makes it easy to explore the typical tourist destinations. The staff were really friendly and helpful.
The location was both a blessing and a curse. After the pandemic there are more homeless and more drug abuses around as I remembered from former visits. There is weed in the whole city of San Francisco - everywhere - and in the hostel as well which leads into interesting encounters at the hostel breakfast as well. The staff had no correct information on public transportation on hand, which I would expect from hostel staff.

It was good to see an upgrade of some things at Orange Village. I have been staying there for the last 10 years when ever I visit the bay area. What I like is the elevator now has the swipe card feature which also functions as your room key. No more inserting a key in the key hole to the rooms. That's very convenient. Good service from Arnold, Moji, and other staff at the front desk at Orange Village. Maria from room service was polite and helpful as well. Keep up the good work everyone.
Outside the hostel could be a bit cleaner. Washing the side walk with a pressure hose in front of the building would be a good idea and definitely add a whole lot to the the view of the hostel.
