We were ending what we called our "Dirt Trip" where accommodations were basic, so the Alex Johnson was definitely a welcome change of pace. The lobby is a beautiful example of rustic opulence, the desk staff was exceptional, drinks on the roof delicious, gift shop ladies interesting... Here's the best: hotel right across street from the Elk Theater, an old movie theater, which was playing Barbie!! Great way to finish a special trip with our 27 year old daughter. It is also in a great location, but unfortunately, our time was too short to explore much.

Clean, professional staff, quick access to bars, restaurants and coffee places, prime location .

I believe I was harassed by a “ghost” during my first night , when “something” pulled my blanket while I was sleeping , and I felt “a presence” in the room for the rest of the night . Our dog was barking on and off looking at the closet for the next couple days for no reason, and it would not go near it . I didn’t realize the hotel was associated with ghost stories,until I had already checked out and somebody mentioned it to me. I don’t believe in ghosts , but it made sense in a way.

For the price paid, an included breakfast is appropriate.

We had breakfast across the street which was excellent. We tried the breakfast connected to the hotel and it was disappointing. Not sure what oil was used to cook the eggs and home fries but it was distasteful. The location was excellent

The hotel is historic but dated. Carpeting had multiple dark stains. Wallpaper needs an update. We had no house keeping because of staff shortage and emptied our own trash and had to seek out clean towels. Bathroom had film of dut on inside door by bottom molding. Gross.

This is the third time I’ve stayed at the Alex Johnson. I love this historic hotel. It has character, is warm and cozy, and is in a great location. Great hot water pressure in the shower. Front desk staff are helpful and friendly. The lobby is comfortable and inviting. Breakfast onsite at Paddy O’Neill’s is good value.

Great location and historic ambiance. Staff was friendly, informative and helpful (Patrick). Parking reasonable and convenient. Great Pub downstairs with a pretty decent Rubin and cold beer. Starbucks for that morning starter. Wish I had more time to hang out. Would make a great base to stay while exploring the region.

Nothing really.

The location was wonderful for the bars and restaurants. The valet parking was nice as well. The history of the hotel is very nice.

The elevator did not work with going to our floor unless we swipped our key on the fob. I was told initially we only need to swipe our card on the fob when you got the the skybar.

Everything, staff were great, friendly, knowledgeable and attentive to us and other guests. Thank you Cynthia, and Patrick for all your assistance.

What I didn’t like about it, is that we didn’t had enough time to stay longer. But we will return again, and will definitely recommend it to family and friends.

Staff was great

The door was not flush with the wall and light from hall came in and the room was not dark. Fridge was broken and our food spoiled but we were taken care of. Took home a spirt, (yeah don't laugh, that place is haunted) took it back to the hotel and the front desk was great with me about it, thank you :)

We are from Australia and loved the Alex Johnson Hotel. The history and location are perfect for exploring the Black Hills. The service and staff were excellent and the room clean and inviting. Great view over the town!

We didn't use the parking valet service, noting that the young men on duty were sometimes distracted.
