Great Traditional Ryokan with private onsen. As expected. The staff were good and the multi course Keisei dinner was unique and delicious. The dinner service is top notch. Good value for money given the busy autumn season.

The location is in sengakuhara which is somewhat interior to other attractions. So I suggest to take a bus from gion rather than coming back all the way back to hakone yumoto station if you are doing the famous roundtrip. I am mentioning it because I found it difficult to plan and can't find this information in any other reviews so want this to be useful to others booking in the future

The private onsen and the entire "ryokan" feel but still having a proper hotel like support (front desk, restaurant, unlimited drinks, small store for goods etc.) was perfect. Staff were exceptionally good as well. Wanted to also help travelers find the place. From the Gora Cable Car Station there is a bus-stop right outside of the station (at/near the train crossroads). Take this bus to "Hakone Highland Hotel" (I believe all busses will stop here from Gora station). Directly across the road from the bus stop is Sengokuhara Shinanoki Ichinoyu. Enjoy your stay!

More variety in the offered meals, though they were EXCELLENT, they only offered Japanese meals. For example, it is mostly seafood so if you have a fish/seafood allergy. Was fine for our 1 night stay.

Great traditional style Japanese rooms, just what we wanted! Really nice to have a small private onsen in the room. The public onsen we loved going to as well as it is much bigger. Dinner and breakfast was super nutritious. We loved our stay here. A lot of the reviews here mention the location being out of the way but don’t let that put you off. Most places to stay in Hakone are pretty spread out. If you have the Hakone free pass it’s very easy to get a bus from Hakone Yumoto station to there (about 25 minutes). Then the hotel is near the bus to take to Lake Ashi and the cable car (also included in the free pass). If you have a lot of luggage I would recommend forwarding it to your next hotel after Hakone instead of bringing it with you and just pack an overnight bag.

Late check in time. No vegetarian options for dinner but I understand that is what’s traditional.

Really recommend booking with the dinner and breakfast included, both were excellent. On top of this, one of our party couldn't eat fish and they were very accommodating of this and prepared her different options for the meals. Location was very good. Multiple busses run to it from Gora and some all the way down to Hakone Yumato and even Odawara (although I would avoid these if bringing large luggage as the Odawara busses can be very crowded and won't necessarily have room for large bags) The private onsen bath with the room we booked was excellent. Only large enough to comfortably fit 2 people at a time but that was fine you don't want to spend too much time in it in one go. We all used it multiple times despite only staying one night. Would have gladly spent a few extra days here to enjoy it further! While it was the most expensive place we stayed during our trip it seemed very reasonably priced for the quality of the food and the inclusion of the private bath. Would definitely recommend for a stay in Hakone.

There was a low level paper window on the ground floor through which noise outside could be heard quite clearly. One of our party had slightly disturbed sleep because of this because it was next to their futon and it was windy overnight. Worth being aware of if you have light sleepers in your group, but wasn't a major issue overall.

Love the experience! The traditional style dinner (we got sukiyaki) + breakfast is delicious! Not to mention the drinks are included. Also love the private onsen. A great way to end/start the day. The room is super quiet. The hotel also provided clear communication regarding how to get there. It's not the easiest place to get to but the food and the onsen really made it worthwhile.

Nothing much really. If anything, the hotel did provide instructions on getting there but it's in their website: https://www.hakonenavi.jp/international/en/ You can find "Route search". Basically from either Odawara or Yumoto station, take the T-line bus bound for Togendai (platform 4 at the Odawara Station East exit bus terminal). The destination bus stop is “Shinanoki Hakone Highland hotel”, #244, and the journey takes about 40-45 minutes from Odawara or 30min from Yumoto. The hotel is about 1 minute from the bus stop. Just be aware that it's a local bus so there's no dedicated baggage space. With many tourists, the bus does get crowded. Also the road is tiny so there could be traffic.

It feels exclusive to be here. We booked the half board and tried their dinner on one night. Adults enjoyed the food a lot! For Kintoki room, we had the outdoor onsen inside our room. It’s very convenient as we don’t have to walk over to the other side for the public onsen in the other building. It’s so cold here in December and dipping in the super hot outdoor onsen hits different! The hotel staff is ever so helpful and friendly, fluent in English as well, gives good recommendations. Feel so thankful for their assistance.

Quite expensive but you pay for what you get. My kids didn’t really enjoy traditional Japanese fare for breakfast but the coupon for Gachapon outside the restaurant made up for it!

The size of the room was nice, pretty big. We had a room with a private onsen which was really nice. We used this several times. It's not a standard hotel, but has various buildings with apartments which gave a cozy feeling. The staff was friendly and made changes to the breakfast when they found out I'm not a fan of fish. It's located a bit outside of Gora, making it more quiet but there is a super nice Chinese gyoza place just 10 minutes walk from the hotel. The only thing stopping us from going there again the second night was the fact that they were closed.

Everything is a bit dated. The curtains in the room were broken and clearly had been for quite a while. It's a big window as well. For us it was ok since it was end of November but if you stay there in the summer it will be very bright. The shower was a bit small and I preferred to shower in the public onsen.

Loved the attached private bath and the large size of the room! The included breakfast and dinner were also exceptional and the staff were very attentive and kind the entire stay! The location as well was a bit of a long trip but a straight shot by bus from Odawara. The location actually let us do the Hakone loop in the opposite direction of most tourists which led to less crowds and waits

While the dining and private bath were in great shape, the room itself could use a bit more cleaning and updating. There was some damage to the walls of our room as well as dirty curtains on the windows. The beds and general living areas were clean though!

Overall loved the experience! Loft room was fun with the beds on a tatami mat. Food was amazing. Even when restaurant staff isn’t able to explain in English, they had menus with English and pictures describing each dish name so you knew what everything was! Private onsen on the balcony was so nice, good size for one person. Our onsen view was facing a tree which was nice (note- you will hear sounds of cars since the street is nearby). Public onsens (indoor and outdoor) is slightly smaller than expected but decent size where it seems locals come here to use. Outdoor public onsen was nice to use and look at the view especially because it was raining. Front desk was super accommodating. Very thoughtful touches everywhere like a flashlight to use on the loft stairs, free rentals from the front lobby such as nail clippers, chargers, yukatas to wear for dinner. It was cold outside so they even had a thicker outer layer to wear over yukata since you have to walk outside between buildings to go to the lobby where the restaurant is. Everything was a wonderful experience.

Nothing! Just an observation for at least the loft room. It was pretty rainy and cold outside during our stay, so the room was nice and cozy. But room is separated by a sliding partition where the entrance foyer, sink, and toilet are not heated and can be a bit cold. But that’s where the toilet heated seats are very helpful.

The particular accommodation I had was massive, very quiet, with a cute garden view. The private onsen was also plenty large enough. I easily fit inside (5'9 175 cm so not huge but a lot of these tend to be small even for average US height). This would be a very comfortable, beautiful stay for a couple and could accommodate more people as well pretty comfortably. The overall location is located very close to a bus stop.

The location was a bit of a walk from the town which would be fine if I had opted for dinner and breakfast (I thought I did but I definitely didn't) so definitely make sure that is in your reservation!
