Very good price. Subcentral location in an atmospheric building with history, wooden stairs and colour carpets. Great staff. Not too overcrowded. A number of common rooms, suitable for quiet remote work with a laptop. Private rooms and doubles are located on another floor from dormitories and have their own kitchen with a terrace, however, it is open for everyone, too. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful. I can definitely recommend this to anybody who visits Dunedin, in this property all is organised with care and love.

Bathroom: very small and 'decorative' hooks for holding clothes/towel reliably. No small shelves for shampoo/soap inside bath cabins, no other options rather than keeping your staff on the floor.

They are very understanding, flexible, they allowed me to extend my stays and when I had a fall, and made sure I was okay. And they have an awesome music room. I am a musician and I had some fun playing on their instruments. I also made some good friends there as well. Which is amazing. And the staff are awesome. It's a clean place as well. It's also the former Dunedin hospital so it's rich in history and it is a historic place which is awesome.

I can find no fault with the chalet. It's an awesome place and Chris is a great manager and the staff are amazing.

The facilities have an old-fashioned vibe. This adds a certain character and charm to the overall experience. Additionally, the friendly and welcoming staff are always on hand to assist with any inquiries. Overall, Chalet Backpackers is a great choice for those who prioritize location and cleanliness, with the added benefit of a nostalgic ambiance.

It was a great experience, nothing to complain about.

Chalet offered everything you'd need from an accomodation, cooking, cleaning and sleeping. Multiple lounge areas, one with a stunning view, multiple bathrooms and shower spaces, free parking outside the building (first come first served) and not a long walk away from tbe hustle of Dunedin.

Cannot put any fault to this accomodation. . . maybe plug sockets at a premium but am really nit picking here

- Cool building with an interesting history. Lord of original features and decor - Friendly staff upon arrival - Good showers - Comfy beds with clean linen - Rooms were a good size - I had a plug socket near my bed, although others didn’t - Loved the music room with pool table - Dining room with lots of board games - TV room and library - Laundry facilities (only one dryer though)

- Wi-Fi was hit-and-miss, depending on where you were in the building - Kitchen was a little too small for the number of guests at peak times - Sofas in TV lounge are pretty grim and stained; need cleaning/replacing - Common rooms locked quite early and not opened again until reception opens - this leaves nowhere to have a private phone call or just sit and chill at night

There were a few issue's one is they would leave the bed room door unlock the change's are anyone could walk in than steal something of value even money from your suitcase or other personal property like jewelries the second concern issue i did not like is they would leave the window open for fresh air however on one windy day the door would squeal than bounce back quit often than he the properly manager would close the window on the one windy night in question the second night so that was my 2 main issues concerns staying at this hostel in Dunedin new Zealand

It was way better than Manor House for sure. I instantly booked this place after checking into Manor House because Manor House was a no-go. Chalet Backpackers is heaven compared to MH. Clean beds, plenty of toilets, plenty of charging points, spacious rooms.

That awful hill I have to walk up every day to return to the hostel!

Nice hostel. Cool building. Friendly atmosphere. Good kitchen space. Easy to make friends. Staff were very helpful and friendly.

Very creaky floorboards upstairs and when the top floor toilet flushed it was very loud

Loved the pretty, old style building. Everything was clean, beds are nice, I liked the common area it had a good view over the town. Guy at the front desk is very friendly and helpful with what you want to see.

Location is a bit out of town- maybe a 15 minute walk and up a hill. Not too bad to walk if the weather is nice.

This house was beautiful and cosy, I enjoyed my stay at this hostel very much ! They have a small library at the 3rd store and the view over the city from the entrance is nice ! The kitchen is big enough and there is a lounge area on each floor. There are also some recommendations of what to do in Dunedin at the reception. My room was quiet and clean !

The road to the hostel is quite steep, be prepared to climb it !
