We loved staying right in the property, just a few minutes’ walk through the gorgeous gardens to access the castle. Our room had amazing views from the balcony out over Dunedin Harbour. It was well appointed and comfortable. The property is on the exceptionally scenic Otago Peninsula and quite close to the Royal Albatross Centre and the beach where the blue penguins nest, which is also a bonus.

Very little. I’d have liked a mirror somewhere that I could use to put on make-up; the mirror over the basin was a bit too far away. I’d also have liked the furniture set out so we could have a side table between the chairs for a glass of wine. Maybe replace the second bed in the room with a seating area.

Absolutely beautiful view. Very spacious and pretty room with lovely clean and well appointed bathroom. Well stocked with quality tea, coffee and toiletries. Castle and garden entry included, as well as a delicious hot and cold breakfast in the Stables. Staff very friendly, attentive and helpful. We also took up the offer of a 4 course dinner in the Castle, which was wonderful.

The layout of the furniture with 2 lounges along the window made it difficult to sit and have a cup of cup of tea. Perhaps replace one of the lounges with 2 chairs. Also, more lighting near the tea cupboard would be helpful when making a cuppa at night.

Staying in a castle was a fascinating concept but we never expected the whole experience to be as lovely as it was. The castle is steeped in history and the gardens are spectacular. The room we had was absolutely divine and the included breakfast was a real treat. We booked the 'trust the chef' dinner and feared our list of food intolerances would make things tricky however we were accommodated without a fuss. We were lucky enough to have a great group of people at the table and a very entertaining host who guided us through a late night tour. We were even treated to a little glimpse of the southern aurora! The staff deserve a special mention as each and every one of them made us feel welcome. There was nothing not to love about the entire experience.

Leaving.

What a fun location to take my son too. We had a fantastic breakfast with the horse looking over in the 'stable' dining room. The castle grounds were magical snowing when we were there, fun to explore. We will never forget the drive up on the misty night to such a wonderful place. Thanks to all the staff who hosted us. Brilliant value for money. Loved the atmospheric fire in cafe fire especially as snowing when there extra appreciated warmth.

Showers in communal space of rooms need a bit of fore planning if with a young child quite tight and water takes a while to warm as expected in type of building

We stayed in the stables at Larnach Castle; it was very unusual and very entertaining. The rooms are not en-suite but there are toilets and showers in the hallway. Dinner in the castle was wonderful and being able to wander round the castle and grounds the next morning was really nice. Breakfast in the stables was excellent with plenty to eat and really good food. All the hotel staff seemed to be really good. The location is a little remote. However, the views are amazing.

Headroom ! Be careful if you are tall, the ceilings slope down almost to the floor.

Everything was fantastic! The location, the hospitality, the facilities. Family of 5 (three teenagers) we arrived during a weather related Civil Defense Emergency. All of Dunedin City was closed off due to flooding or slips. (One in 100yr event.) The staff and owners went above and beyond for us and kept us well informed of the situation. We had to stay an extra night. All meals provided. Rooms were good size, beds comfortable and shower was great. Castle itself was interesting and stunning, the gardens beautiful despite the weather. I believe the view is great but we spent two days up in the clouds and rain (not complaining as down in the city there were houses flooded and slips through). It really felt like we were living back in time! And, surprisingly given the circumstances, quiet and relaxing. Definitely would return, to see the views, castle and gardens again.

A magical family adventure with added bonus of watching snow across the gardens followed by a warm up by the castles cafes grand open fires. We stayed in the less glamorous stables which had a fresh breakfast buffet and cooked breakfast that was quite an experience in the stone stable with a horse overlooking. The accomodation was quirky, a little dark and stuffy being at atmospheric conversion. Shared facilities were well laid out in the centre and sink in our room and toilets. Showers were small for a Mum and child wash, but managed well with no one else around at the time else would have struggled to support my son in privacy. We felt safe and staff attentive and friendly. The explore of the castle and gardens in the price was amazing. Fantastic stay for us a single parent family. The arrival in the mist at the gates as the light fell at the closed castle grounds after a long road up hill was an experience we won't forget. No ghosts seen and all very cosy. Cafe great as was breakfast. Staff all lovely and good with my son. Highly recommend the stay as an experience very different to elsewhere.

I wonder still if the horse had a name in the stable. ...don't go to bolder beach as this app asked.. Sandfly bay has lots of seals and amazing to visit just down the road. Some other tourists were really unrespectful to the seals space which was a concern and not great. The area is stunning. We took a walk to the view point over Dunedin too, stunning and nearby Albatross centre makes it an ideal place to stay with kids a few nights.

Excellent accommodation and beautiful setting in Castle grounds. Breakfast served in the stables open-plan dining area was fantastic, variety of fruit, cereals, nuts, seeds, yogurt, breads to toast and choice of cooked meal. We had the full works which was delicious and large! We booked dinner in the Castle which was an amazing experience, delicious a la carte multi course, nice wines and excellent staff service, with a special tour of the main floor of Castle afterwards. Thoroughly recommend booking dinner as very special experience.

Everything perfect

I loved the castle. We had dinner at the castle and enjoyed the experience. My boys enjoyed touring the castle and the gardens/cafe. I loved the easy access to the peninsula attractions. The breakfast was amazing and I loved the pretty blue willow plates it was served on. The staff were friendly and helpful. My kids loved "learning about the history and looking at the castle".

The rooms in the stables are dated as per the photos *although the TV had been updated. The shared showers are tiny and would struggle to fit a larger person. The toilets are stalls (3 in a row), so no privacy. You constantly hit your head in the room as the ceilings are low. (Luckily there is padding on the beams!). There is nothing to sit your luggage on (no luggage stand). There is no windows in the room if you are wanting a view. Soundproofing is not a thing, It is as described and I am not complaining here! It was better than I expected and I wasn't expecting fancy booking a stables room.

The staff, very friendly, the beds so comfy, didn't want to get out of bed, the breakfast was fabulous, plenty to eat and well cooked by the chef. The 4-course dinner in the castle, joined in on a total of 21 at the big table, good fun and company, the food, first two courses were yum, the main was a bit dry and over cooked, desert was yum.

The castle was being renovated, wish they were upfront about this, we may not have stayed two nights? There were two kids above our room jumping and running a lot, not so relaxing but after 2 hours we phoned reception and they were very efficient and resolved it well, so not too bad.
