This hotel has managed to retain its charm and elegance of how I imagine it was back when the hotel was built in the Victorian era. The restaurant and desk area had wood panelled walls with many framed photos of the hotel in its heyday. I loved the wood and glass revolving doors, complete with brass fittings. The food was tasty and good value for money, and the staff, polite, friendly, and attentive. Good stop off if heading to the Highlands, or exploring the North Lakes. Our room was great, bed comfy and a modern bathroom with fabulous shower.
The connecting corridors and stairs to the rooms need some redecoration.

Location-wise it was absolutely spot on - right in the main square and although our room seemed to be right at the back of the hotel it was lovely and a good size, we had a modern, well appointed bathroom with Elemis toiletries - and a very comfortable bed! We decided to stay in and eat as we'd had a long day. The menu choices were good and our meal was tasty. Breakfast was also very good with a good choice of hot and cold food. Every member of staff we came into contact with was friendly and helpful. We would definitely return.
Such a small thing but the coffee at breakfast was not very good, it tasted like weak, instant coffee.

I booked with no regard to the hotel as I was there to support a friend at a funeral and wanted to be in the same hotel. I had no expectations when I arrived, tired and late. The staff were welcoming, efficient, and available. The building. I had no idea of the history, or that Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed there in his bid to reclaim the throne in 1745, but history is built into this hotel. I loved the wood, comfortable furniture, and want to know when the art deco glass went in. “I went to the George and had a pot of coffee and muffin and toast, the first comfortable meal I had enjoyed for some days, and I insensibly felt myself restored”. James Boswell.

Room 14 was recently refurbished and excellent. Initial room (11) as allocated very poor, drab with many faults so we were reallocated by reception. The breakfast was excellent. The location of the hotel is brilliant and very happy to pay ÂŁ3.00 for private parking at rear of hotel.
The evening meal although good (early bird) the atmosphere was poor as only one other table occupied by four people who were very loud making an enjoyable evening spoilt. The following morning on check out we discovered an overcharge for the meal in excess of ÂŁ5.00 which was rectified by reception.

We had a very comfortable stay at The George Hotel on 15 November 2024. We had a dog friendly room which was very clean and had a very comfortable king size bed. The staff were all very welcoming and helpful. The evening meal and breakfast were great. The icing on the cake was that when we accidentally left a coat in the room the staff posted it back to us very promptly. Excellent customer service. Thank you
I wish I had checked the parking location more thoroughly beforehand. The car park is behind the hotel but with the one way system - and perhaps me misreading the sat nav - it was a little tricky to find in the dark.

The staff were so friendly, welcoming and helpful throughout the stay. The hotel is a beautiful old building with loads of character, but the rooms have clearly been upgraded with more modern bathrooms and beds. The breakfast was very good. Location is ideal for exploring town.
The parking could be slightly frustrating - although space was readily available out the front and the hotel provided a parking pass, the need to move the car at 09:00 was fine for us as we had to get on the road anyway, but might have been slightly inconvenience if you were staying for a few days - which everything else about The George would make us want to do! There seemed to be parking elsewhere in town to move to though. A minor issue when you get to stay in such a central, characterful place!!

I was pleased to find the George really 'up to scratch' as sometimes these older properties look great in the photos but are a little tired in reality. This was NOT the case with the George, there was everything that was needed at just the right level of service. Really good value.
This was entirely my fault - my room was very warm, but I couldn't find the radiator, it was 'hidden' in plain sight under the TV and behind a chair. So I could have controlled the room temperature or even asked Reception. So now you know the heating is good|

The staff were friendly, welcoming and helpful. Lovely room, upgraded to Club double. Had dinner when we arrived and the food was lovely. Breakfast was nice with a good variety available. We were in Penrith for a family funeral, and if it wasn't for commitment at home we would have loved to have stayed longer and enjoyed the hotel more.
The entrance for the car park is a different post code to the hotel address. Had I have missed the turning it was a long way to get back round the one-way system. Perhaps the car park post code should be included in the hotel iformation

I have been visiting Penrith for over 25 years . I haven't ever stayed in the town before . I booked The George on this occasion for 3 x nights with my partner . The hotel was a very pleasant surprise , in its quality & comfort. We found the hotel to be welcoming clean & comfortable. We dined on our final evening - the quality of the food & service was excellent - likewise our morning breakfast was nicely presented & delicious .
The ÂŁ3 surcharge for Parking was a little disappointing- it wasn't "a significant factor" but hadn't been stayed on booking .

Staff were exceptional. Very friendly and attentive. Nothing to much trouble. A box of chocolates left in my room for my birthday. Thank you. A lovely gesture. Breakfast excellent Bar facilities and service excellent. Facilities in room good. Tea Coffee, etc. Iron & ironing board, hairdryer. Nice to also have a bath, not just shower. Hotel is an old traditional building with lots of character. Central for shops bars and restaurants
Room quite small. No view. It was very warm. fan provided. Was given a choice to upgrade at extra cost, but I thought what we had already paid was sufficient. WiFi in room poor.
