Visited Durham for the illumination festival inside the cathedral. The City Hotel is quite nearby. Excellent clean and well presented room. Over a busy and full pub. Lady who showed us to the room was professional and most kind. All done quickly as she was serving on at the bar. Room snug and cozy on a blowy cold night. Although overlooking the busy outside street and over the pub was really quiet and peaceful. But was nice to think others were enjoying the friendly pub. Great facilities. You just turn on the heating as you wish. Easy access explained fully by staff. Enjoyable and would recommend to anyone visiting Durham.

The hotel was in a great location with easy access to the main historical sights. Check-in was easy and the team member was friendly and escorted me to my room. She showed me the various keys and clearly explained the access code for the security door. The room was a compact size, nicely decorated and very clean. The single bed was comfortable and there was adequate storage. There was a supply of tea/coffee and a chocolate, some sweets and biscuits which was a nice welcome.
The plumbing was quite noisy but didn't interfere with the enjoyment of my stay. There was some general noise in the evenings from the bar downstairs but was to be expected. The hotel had supplied some earplugs but I had brought my own. As it is an old building there are a number of stairs/landings to navigate. This was not a problem for me but would be if anyone has mobility issues.

Location fab, very friendly, comfortable rooms....just a touch warm through the night but wouldn't put me off. Considering above a pub had a good sleep ...wasn't noisy. Allowed to leave our cases which was a great help as train wasn't until afternoon, fab location near everything, great little pub too with a great offer of a card stamp , buy 3 pints get next one free đ would defo stay again....five stars đ also had everything you needed in the room....the little bowl of sweets on the dresser is a cute touch too ...had an upstairs sun terrace , partly covered with tv showing the rugby đ great place to stay ...really enjoyed it. Thankyou
Nothing really....just room a little bit warm but opened windows a bit more and was fine ....room was lovely though with everything you needed ...in the room we stayed in number 1...I'd maybe add another full length mirror on the wall to the right as go in.....more room to step back and see yourself đ but still a fab room with no faults really just some feedback đ

Really friendly welcome on arrival and shown up to our room. The room was excellent and was very clean and tidy. Fantastic location literally in the centre. No on-site parking but we parked in the shopping centre car park over the bridge and was only a 4 minute walk over the bridge.
As a couple travelling the only thing that we think could improve the room is having another chair to sit in. When we are getting ready to go out itâs nice to have a little drink and sit by the window. There is a stool but not very comfy. Thatâs the only thing and itâs not a criticism at all as everything else was perfect.

The location is fabulous. Close to the River, castle, restaurants and bars. Underneath friendly bar which is handy for a nightcap. Very clean and modern decor - the sweets in the room were a lovely bonus. I liked that the building was old and had some character.
Some people may feel traffic can be noisy - but we did not find this a problem. Ear plus were provided. However, I always take some away with me. Nothing to dislike really. We found the location perfect for wandering around beautiful Durham City.

The location was excellent, in the city centre and close to all amenities and historic sites. The room was large and well presented. All of the staff were very friendly and helpful. Bus stop right by the hotel with buses to the train and bus stations and further afield if you do not have a car.
There is limited provision for clothes - only a rail in the bedroom but the bathroom was so large it could fit a wardrobe in there. The hotel is on a main road so there is traffic noise but they do provide ear plugs so wasn't an issue for us. Not a major issue but we couldn't get the TV to work.

I arrived in the evening at the bar, when the final of the Euro games were starting, and the ladies at the counter made me wait 5 minutes and then took me upstairs. My room was number 7 and it was the one at the very top of the building. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT. It was away from the noise so I could focus on my job interview preparation and/or rest well. It was also very big, as it wasn't just a room but a whole apartment. I was so stressed for the interview and for other family issues going on in my life, and the colours and the ambient of that apartment really helped me relax. A whole beautiful apartment for yourself? in the heart of a city like Durham? Wonderful! It literally has everything: washing machine, oven, hob, kettle, toaster, shower/bath... and I LOOOVED the massive and comfortable bed. I just wish I was living in there for few years really :D a lovely apartment, in the centre of a lovely city! Not to mention the friendly ladies from the bar/hotel: they allowed me to leave a luggage after the check-out and let my friend come and grab it the following day with no additional charge: wonderful people! Hotels need more people like you! THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
The addition of a microwave would make the apartment 100% perfect.

I had the single room for two nights. Really good value. A small, cosy but adequate room for a solo traveller. The shower was very strong. I appreciated the small touches of chocolate and candies in the room alongside the tea making facility. Very clean room. Great location at Elvet Riverside and one minute walk to all the nice cafes and restaurants.
I did not realise that the hotel was directly above a bar until I arrived. The staff however were kind enough to remind me that there was a Euro football game the night I checked in. However after 10pm, the crowd in the outdoor garden terrace left and it was very very quiet. So it did not turn out to be any problem.

The hotel is ideally situated for exploring Durham, right at the bottom of Elvet Bridge which leads into the compact city centre. The rooms are located over a busy pub, so it can get a bit lively but the spacious and very well appointed Studio apartment that we stayed in was right at the top of the house, so away from the immediate noise.
You have to climb several steep and rather idiosyncratic stairs to get to the Studio. There are a lot of odd corners and different floor levels, even within the Studio, so initially you need to watch out you don't trip.

Beautifully appointed penthouse apartment, nicely furnished, with lots of character, in an attractive building close to the historic city centre. There was a kitchen area with a fridge, which was very useful. The staff were really friendly and helpful.
Road noise was a real problem. The hotel provided earplugs, but they didn't deaden the road noise in the front-facing room. A bit of rearrangement in the apartment would allow all beds to be away from the front; alternatively (but more expensively), secondary glazing on the front-facing windows. If staying in a standard room, I'd recommend guests ask for a rear-facing room. Also, one of the two TVs in the apartment had no signal. Was sold as a hotel suite (not self-catering), but could become a proper self-catering apartment if the oven was fixed and a microwave provided.
