The hotel met our expectations completely - it is centrally located (1 minute from the city centre), very clean and additionally, the room for 3 is quite spacious. All that might be required was already in the room (iron, hair dryer, bathroom necessities etc). Further, the beds were comfortable and there was enough space to move around without bumping into each other (even the bathroom was quite big with a bathtub inside as well). As a whole, I would certainly recommend staying there!

I would say seeing the pub on the ground floor was slightly worrying at first but overall no noise was heard during the nights we were there resulting in a peaceful stay.

Period charm of the building and location where just perfect for our needs, rooms looked recently decorated and well enough equipped, and staff were friendly in the bar downstairs to show us to our rooms. It was really convenient for the university, shops and cafes with all the sights and charm of the cathedral and castle only a few minutes stroll. On a practical note the train station was about 10 mins walk with regular trains to and from Newcastle, where we were able to get the metro to the Newcastle airport which was so convenient.

While this wasn't an issue for us, there was great live entertainment in the bar on Friday night which we enjoyed, it finished around 22.30pm, just if you happened to have young children, you can hear in the rooms

Lovely comfortable single room. Lots of little comforts and nice amenities including tea and coffee and a kettle. Comfortable and clean bed and bathroom although the bathroom does have some minor wear. Great location in the city, close to everything I needed and on a bus route direct from the railway station. Lovely staff and a nice bar on the ground floor.

Didn't realise the hotel rooms are above a hotel bar; potentially the rooms could be quite loud some nights. My room must have been adjacent the beer garden and was loud until about 10:30 but quickly quietened and was not a problem.

The Penthouse 'room' was huge, it was more like an apartment! Super clean and comfortable, lovely friendly staff who kept us supplied with everything we needed. Fast wifi. We could see the castle and the Cathedral from our bedroom (we were top floor). Durham is lovely and has super friendly people and we couldn't believe how amazing the restaurants and cafes are! Portions are huge and prices are very fair too.

The loo made a funny noise every fifteen minutes or so, but with the door closed we didn't notice it. We had a fire alarm at 7:45 on the last day, but that wasn't the hotel's fault. It's really just rooms over a pub so NO FOOD but our room had a small kitchenette (no post or pans but a microwave). But there are loads of amazing cafés and restaurants around Durham.

This hotel is amazing! Gillian went above and beyond for us, she knew it was for a birthday and decorated the room with balloons and a card from the venue. We stayed in the family studio which is the penthouse and it was immaculate, great size and lovely decorated. The location is great 👍 near to Elvet Bridge and ubers were around all the time for getting elsewhere. The rates are amazing. We will defo be back! Thank you so much.

Our room was on the road so we did hear the traffic but we were provided with ear plugs complimentary so it didn't affect our stay.

Lovely staff who were helpful and happy in their work. Easy check in. Great offer in the bar on drinks. Lovely comfortable room with nice finishing touches - sweets were enjoyed. Central location. The main road was busy but the hotel provided ear plugs as part of the complimentary room bits. This was thoughtful. However, the double glazing was excellent and we actually didn't need them when it came to it.

Parking was expensive. Nothing to do with the place itself - just Durham. Maybe there is cheaper local parking that is available?

Check-in and out was easy and all staff were friendly. This set up was perfect for me as I came to Durham for a conference: so coming in and out very early in the morning and late at night was easy to do. As a solo traveller I felt safe here as there were multiple doors with locks. Facilities were more than I expected.

Due to the nature of my stay, I cannot comment on the location a part from it clearly has lovely location with it being the heart of Durham, and there is great coffee and butty shop across the road). I also cannot comment on noise as the pub was closed during the times I was there.

Location was great for all amenities. Room was clean and bed/pillows extremely comfortable. Room I believe had just recently been refurbished and to a good contemporary standard in my opinion. Shower above large bath was really good pressure with option to drench or spray. Bathroom was huge and nice touch with sanitary products provided. Really good value for money. Room 9 at front of building, nicely decorated and road noise didn't disturb us at all. Unfortunately forgot to take photos of this tastefully decorated room!

Nothing major, but a couple of minor niggles which could possibly be looked at.... No mirror in bedroom to allow hairdrying/styling as obviously no sockets in bathroom. Bedside tables were of wrought iron type construction and would benefit from either glass or table mat on top of slats to stop small items of jewellery, keys etc, falling through. Other than that, we enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay again and would highly recommend.

Loved absolutely everything! Joanne and the rest of the staff we met (and those we didnt) went above and beyond to make our (much needed and long overdue) break memorable. The room was fantastic and the bed was one of the most comfortable ever experienced and the chocolate on the pillow always deserves brownie points as does the frozen cocktails 🍹 Great location close to the city centre with wide choice of places to eat and drink. Absolutely love this place so much that we've already booked a return trip which already looking forward to. To anyone ever thinking of visiting Durham The City Hotel is fantastic find and deserves 5* recognition. A big thank you to everyone

Nothing, everything was fantastic!

We had the family room in the penthouse suite and a single room. The staff were very pleasant and helpful. When we arrived at the pub the area was filling up with couples, and small groups of people starting off on their evening out. By the time we came back near closing it was rammed to the walls with well behaved students, not for me so off to our room but no noise heard from the bar. Although ear plugs are provided if needed. Place spotless, loved the little sweets that were in the rooms. The suite room couldn't ask for anything more all needs provided, however could do with a thicker curtain at the sash window as could feel the cold from the window and the TV was working but appeared to be damaged and the bottom of the screen would roll Single bed had a mattress protector but could do with a mattress topper as it was too hard for me

Thin curtain at sash window Single mattress hard
