Rooms met our expectations, as we only wanted a room to visit Durham for the one night with breakfast. Staff were extremely helpful, on street parking (car park limited to three vehicles), very quiet neighbourhood with no students up at all hours. The bed was lovely and soft, with a comfortable pillow and duvet. A key to allow ourselves in or out whenever we wanted to, and no noise from the other guests staying there throughout the night. The accommodation would not be suitable for disabled people, but the hotel never promised that. The stairs to the upper rooms was very narrow, and quiet elevated. There were bannister rails up the two flights, and quiet manageable if you took your time.
Breakfast: Our only point that we didn't like, the breakfast was very greasy. It wasn't very appetising due to the amount of oil present on and in the food, and it seemed like no thought had gone into making it for your customers. Sorry guys, but it was a little off-putting. Not expecting al-a-carte by any means, but the breakfast was of extremely poor standard when everything else was just lovely.

The Avenue was easy to find and the staff were great. Unfortunately we were too late for an evening meal but the breakfast was really good. There was a good quality tea and coffee selection in the room with biscuits. The room size was ok with twin beds. We were visiting Durham and the location was great, with the buses running past the hotel.
The room was really hot, even with the window open, and the walls were quite thin so we could hear conversations of our neighbours on the phone. Unfortunately the shower was broken and only very hot/ scalding water would come out once warmed up.

Wonderful place to stay everything was 5 star. Rich, Clare,Lisa and the rest of the team couldn't do enough. The friendliest team we have ever come across. Normally stay in 5 star hotels but The Avenue went above and beyond. One of the most comfortable beds we have slept in, lovely quality bedding and towels, plenty of hot water and warm rooms. Breakfast really good and freshly cooked. Couldn't fault The Avenue in any way
Wardrobe space a bit small but only because we were staying 9 nights with lots of winter clothing. Lighting could have been a bit better

A warm & friendly welcome on arrival with attentive service until departure. We met Clare first who cheerfully checked us in, showed us to our rooms, both with comfy beds, duvets & pillows, clean bathrooms with toiletries, plush towels, tea & coffee tray & adequate storage facilities for clothes. The old property pub character was charming mixed with the inclusion of up dated effects that made for a very warm & relaxing feel. Food was plentiful & reasonably priced, our stay included full English breakfast, or smaller breakfast options if you preferred. Food & drinks were served quickly & efficiently plus the clearing of tables was spot on:) The reason for our stay was to attend a family funeral in the area, The Avenue staff being naturally friendly & caring, we will definitely return when we are heading Durham way again, hopefully when the weather is warmer for a cocktail 🍹 Huge thanks again Clare, Rich & Lisa All the best for the future love from Bev, Steve & Maureen 🤗

Room was spacious and clean. The staff was friendly and courteous. They kept us informed when they were having work done and the water would be turned off allowing us to properly plan our day. I loved the breakfast in the mornings, were able to select what time we wanted to have it served in the dining area downstairs. My boyfriend and I really enjoyed our stay and will be recommending this inn to our friends. Easy to get to city centre from here, bus stop located directly across the street. Petrol station located up the main road about half mile. I stopped by the morning of check in and the staff were able to hold on to my suitcase prior to check in which was a plus. Check in was a breeze and paid for our stay at the bar.
The only negative thing I can even remotely think from our stay was the bed, you could sometimes feel the seam in the middle where they joined two smaller sized beds to create the king size bed.

The staff were very friendly and made us feel so welcome. The room was clean and the beds were incredibly comfy! We had a meal in the evening and the service and food were excellent. Breakfast did not disappoint either, I had the eggs Benedict and jr was so tasty! I would definitely recommend!
A point that did not negatively impact our stay at all but good for future guests to be aware of - with it being a Saturday night and a pub there was loud music playing in the evening. This did not bother us at all and as I say it did not affect our stay, but something to consider if you are thinking of booking at the weekend!

Despite the Euros being on, we barely heard the noise once we were in our room. The food was absolutely gorgeous. We tried everything from steak to burgers and pies as well as the hearty breakfast that really set us up for the day.
I'm not really a fan of dogs being in the dining area but it wasn't a major issue. The owners were very respectful and we found a table at the other end of the dining room. At the end of the day, it's a pub so you know what you're going into but just mentioning in case it's a deal breaker for others. The shower was a step up from the floor with no hand rail etc and the shower was a squeeze to even get in as a larger person (I'm a size 18-20 and had to breathe in and get in sideways!) so didn't feel too safe. There was WAY too much hollandaise sauce on the eggs benedict but it was nice all the same. The fire alarm going off at 5.30am wasn't great either - lol!

This is a local pub and not a 5 star hotel. It is one of my favourite places to stay in Durham. I am usually there alone when visiting my aged mother who is in a care home nearby. The staff are welcoming and friendly. I always feel safe there, I am happy to visit the bar alone in the evening. The breakfasts are well cooked , the pub and rooms are clean, there is parking and the location is good for access to Durham city and the surrounds.
While for me the location is good it is not in the city itself. So if ypu want to visit the catherdral or castle etc. you need to drive and park or get the bus. The buses are cheap and frequent tho.

This is without any doubt one of the friendliest places in which I have stayed. The staff were so welcoming and friendly and there was such a family atmosphere there. I loved my stay there and I shall make a point of trying to stay here again when I am travelling down the east of England. The staff provided excellent advice on where best to park in Durham and how to get there, all part of their outstanding service. Monday night is (very competitive) quiz night and the questions are extremely challenging. I only took part passively and despite being a keen quizzer I would only have managed 18/40! I take my hat off to the skill of the lady who puts these together. The location is also excellent as it is only a few minutes off the main road.

I would 100% recommend a stay here. We were visiting Durham for the universities' open day with our 2 children and are so pleased we booked to stay at The Avenue. We will definitely be returning again in the future. The rooms were clean and the beds were very comfortable. We booked in for dinner here also, which was all really lovely and well presented. They had a fantastic pianist playing live music, which just added to the already friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Our son Frankie was also allowed to get up and play a few songs during the break where all the staff and local residents were so supportive. This made our night. The staff were all truly fantastic and could not have been more accommodating and friendly. To top it off, our breakfast was delicious! Thank you to the landlord Rich and Claire for such a brilliant stay. I'm sure we will be seeing you soon. The Currans
