My partner & I are a middle-aged couple travelling on a budget so maybe we're not the typical 'backpackers'. We didn't stay in a dorm, we had our own room with a private bathroom. The room was small, but had all we needed... it's a backpackers, not a hotel. But it was warm & the beds were very comfortable...& it was quiet! The private rooms aren't located in the main building, we were in a small alley to the side, so we heard no noise from other occupants nor any street noise at all, which was great. Staff were friendly & the location is absolutely fantastic....just off the Royal Mile, a short walk from most tourist sites, including less than ten minutes to Edinburgh Castle. We had a great stay.

Remembering it's a backpackers, not a hotel....so I'm not sure I can think of any negatives considering it's price, facilities, & location

There's a spacious common room for eating, or simply hanging out, with even a pool table. The shared kitchen was kept clean and tidy by staff and, surprisingly, guests. The 8-bed dorm was adequate, though some lockers were broken. Only one bunkbed was creaky, but lower beds had little head-room, so they were only for sleeping. I was most appreciative of the lovely staff who helped me with a personal problem - thanks again!

It would be good to provide a mop for showers, as some guests flooded the ladies' bathroom floor. Shower stalls could be better maintained, again more a problem of guests than of staff.

The room was in a nearby building and the restroom was on the same floor. They were very clean, bright, and comfortable. The train station and the bus stops were within walking distance, and the hostel is close to bustling streets!

The hostel provided us with a great discount voucher for a cafe beside it, so we decided to have breakfast there the next morning. However, when it was time to pay, I forgot to present the voucher. I quickly remembered and asked the staff if I could use it, but they refused to reprocess the payment, saying it was not their fault. This experience was quite disappointing, as we were simply trying to use a benefit provided by our hostel. The café’s attitude left us very unsatisfied and did not meet our expectations.

Excellent location, right in the Old Town, just a few steps away from the Cathedral and Royal Mile. Nice street full of nice cafés and quirky shops. The Southern Star Café next to the hostel serves wonderful breakfast and offers a 25% discount to hostel guests. We (mother and daughter) had booked a private double with shared bathroom. The room wasn’t in the actual hostel building, but across the street in a nice, much smaller building. We were on the top floor (room nr 3) which meant climbing up a lot of narrow stairs with our bags, but we didn’t mind. Cute, clean little room overlooking the roofs of the Old Town - we loved it. There were only two bedrooms on our floor and two bathrooms, so no wait at all. In the floor below is a very nice, spotless shared kitchen for the whole building. Would definitely stay here again. Oh, and staff was really friendly, too.

The location was brilliant. We are seniors so I requested the lowest floor possible to avoid stairs for my husband. The staff accommodated this request and were very caring carrying our luggage for us. Despite sharing bathroom facilities this wasn’t a problem as there were sufficient to meet the needs of guests around us. Would thoroughly recommend!

No lift, but it was to be expected in a building in the Old Town. Maybe advise people arriving by train to exit by Princes street and approach the accommodation from North Bridge which is flatter than walking from Market street up Cockburn Street.

The showers were really nice in the morning!!! And there were lockers in the room for each bed which was amazing! It was very handy and comforting to see that I could store my things into a locker! And there were sockets for you to charge your phone which was perfect! Not a lot of beds in the room which made me feel more safe and comfortable being in the room! The staff were lovely and informed me where everything was or how to find areas of the hostel! Also getting a 15% discount to the cafe next door was a nice touch! Really enjoyed my breakfast!

There was no bed lighting or curtains around the bed area for privacy. Apart from those things the staff were lovely and direct!

Great location, friendly staff, comfy beds and new decor.

Place gets very busy on a Saturday, and unfortunately some of the guests don't know how to behave. This is no reflection on the property or staff, but there needs to be more cleaning in the dorm bathrooms during the weekend, because some 'personal rubbish' was left from the afternoon until the morning, which was disgusting. Also, towels should be free for the price you pay!

It was great to have a private room right in the centre of the city. The room was quite big and with views of Cockburn Street. The shared toilet was right outside and there were other toilets on other floors that were accessible if the closest one was being used.

The room wasn't actually located in the main hostel building but instead was a bit down the street. We wish we had known this because we had been hoping to use the fridge and while we could still have gone up to the hostel for this, it wasn't as convenient as we had hoped.

Staying at Backpackers was an absolute delight from start to finish. From the moment I stepped into the elegant lobby, I was greeted with warm smiles and exceptional service that set the tone for a truly memorable stay. But what truly sets Backpackers apart is its staff. Their dedication to ensuring every guest feels like royalty is unmatched. They went above and beyond to accommodate my requests and make my stay unforgettable. And the location? Perfect. Centrally located, I was able to explore the city's vibrant culture and attractions with ease, knowing that I could return to the warm embrace of Backpackers at the end of the day.

Location, kitchen, common areas, luggage service. They allow you to increase your experience in Burgh feeling at home. One of the guys at the reception was lovely, super kind, and really nice to deal with (thin, hat, mustaches, brown).

Tiny lockers, no bed curtain, no padlock, no personal light in beds, kitchen window broken (is freezing inside). Few male toilets. No lavabo area. Extra fees for card payments (it is not legal). At reception, rules change with people: for someone things are free, then the person changes and you have to pay for the access even if you agree on something different. Just pay attention and be clear.
