We stayed in Room 4. It was a very big room with a super king bed which was fabulous. We slept very, very well. Our breakfast in the morning was gorgeous, great service and very good quality meat.

For the price we paid for the room, I was expecting a little more, I have to admit. There was no hairdryer in the room, my husband had to retrieve one from reception. When he did, it was definitely past its best- it was the loudest and most dated hairdryer I have ever used. Secondly, I was expecting a waterfall shower over the bath. There was only an attachment, which again, was quite dated. I was also expecting robes and slippers, given again, the price we paid and the fact that the property advertises itself as five star. Lastly, while our breakfast was gorgeous, there was no cold selection at all. No pastries or yoghurts while we waited. We could have requested granola but it was disappointing not to have a small buffet selection there.

Plato's is a lovely boutique hotel in the interesting, historic, hilly, and beautiful old town of Kirby Lonsdale, which is perfectly situated for touring both The Lakes and The Yorkshire Dales. Our comfortable and nicely-appointed room was on the third floor and had a window seat that overlooked the street. Somewhat tucked away, the hotel was quiet, even though it was near the center of town. We appreciated the excellent breakfasts--and the pass for free parking in the nearly lot.

Having to park a few blocks away was a bit inconvenient, but not as bad as we first thought. We spent the days touring the countryside, so we were in and out of the car a lot.

I suffer a mobility problem as I am waiting for a new knee and stairs are a problem. On arriving,being shown to our room I realised it was on the second floor and extremely difficult to negotiate. Ben, who showed us to the room also noticed and he came back minutes after leaving and offered us a free upgrade to a room on the first floor. This saved our holiday, can’t Plato’s enough.

A bit more information would help, as in the location of the rooms, also the property description says no parking available, but the first thing I was asked was did I need a parking permit they provide free of charge. I had already spent £20 for 3 Days parking.

Situated at the centre, the hotel was ideal for walking out and exploring this very attractive small town. The decor of the hotel was stylish and original. The reception was very helpful. Dinner was excellent, and breakfast of a high order. The room, equipped with good facilities, was well furnished to make the most of limited space, and had limited but interesting views over the courtyard and street.

We had difficulty getting the coffee right at breakfast. Parking, provided free to guests in the nearby town carpark, was not very convenient and could have made arrival and departure difficult in bad weather, but that is the cost of being at the centre of a town with narrow streets.

All the staff were super helpful and friendly and the breakfasts were fantastic (the best quality I've had in the UK for quite a while). My room (#3) had a comfortable bed with high quality pillows and linen. The bathroom was modern and spacious. Television was a decent size and bottled water, tea and biscuits were replenished daily. The room was cleaned to a high standard.

The room became stuffy very quickly, and this was during a period of low 20s Celsius temps. An Air Con unit (perhaps portable?) would have made all the difference.

Had a fabulous stay here. Location couldn’t be any better, right in the centre of town and they give you a parking permit that allows you to park free for the duration. Place is modern and decorated lovely, staff nice and friendly, dog friendly too. Breakfast is menu style with lots of choice. We had full English the first morning and eggs Benedict the morning after and both were top notch and delicious. We also ate in the restaurant at lunch time and that was equally as delicious. Couldn’t think of anywhere better to stay in this town and we were very pleased with our choice. Thank you Platos!

The room we were given was very small and this was the only downside to our stay. Room was lovely but really was tiny. We stayed in room 5 but I’m sure there are bigger rooms available. It didn’t hinder our stay much as everything else made up for it.

Arrival and check-in were very smooth; the staff accommodated us well, taking our cases upstairs and switching rooms when they noticed my mother-in-law struggled with the stairs. The room was bijou (standard room) but beautiful. The quality of the bed sheets, duvet, and pillows was exquisite. This was a winter break, and we enjoyed sitting in front of the wood-burning stove in comfortable armchairs and later wandering out to the high street to shop and returning to amazing food, lovely wine and great service. Not our first visit and it won't be our last. 3 nights / 4 days of great hospitality, thank you

Absolutely nothing to grumble about

We’ve been to Plato’s on previous visits to Kirkby Lonsdale so know what to expect. Once again it was very comfortable with an excellent breakfast. Great too having a free parking voucher.

This isn’t really a criticism but a comment intended to be helpful. We didn’t mention these issues to staff because we were only staying one night - perhaps we should have. In our room one of the lights, by the wardrobe and door, didn’t work. Also the table lamp switch was broken meaning it could only be switched off/on at the wall socket. One of the brass ‘balls’ on the bedstead was missing (although we recognise such a thing could be difficult to replace/repair). Finally when we checked in, a cleaners’ cloth was lying on the bathroom floor. Breakfast was excellent but sadly they didn’t have any decaf tea which we usually drink.

Great hotel in a really pretty village. Staff were all lovely, so helpful and friendly. A very comfortable bed and good shower. Food and drinks were excellent. We especially enjoyed our 'cooked to order' breakfasts. The bar was always busy, which gave it a really nice atmosphere - just like a local. You could eat in the restaurant or the bar.

The stairs up to the rooms are quite steep but it an old building and therefore has character. We were on the first floor, so thankfully not too many steps.

Beautiful old property in the centre of Kirkby Lonsdale with a lively bar and restaurant with a lovely fire. We had a great evening meal and wonderful breakfast. The staff were exceptional, it really makes such a difference so thank you. Dog friendly too which is perfect, our dog Roxy loved the sausage for breakfast. These little touches really make this property stand out. We have stayed in Kirkby Lonsdale lots of times and in different places but Platos is our favourite.
