What an absolute GEM of a place to stay! It's a gorgeous group of buildings set on the banks of a picturesque tumbling stream up a valley which carries some of the runoff from the higher tarns and streams. The valley sides are steep scree or loose slate, studded here and there with old pipes, dams, retaining walls, paths and other signs of a deep history of slate mining. The car park has ample space for the people staying in the hostel. From the car park, there's a little gate and some steps down to a rustic concreted area, that then leads down towards the main door. The bar area and restaurant are on the right. the bar area doubles as the common area. It's small, but it's set up nicely, with games and leaflets to read. We played some chess, some chequers, Boggle and attempted a game of Cluedo. The common area felt nice enough you could sit in it and relax, although it didn't have a view out. The staff were superb. They were so kind with the kids, and couldn't have been more welcoming from the moment we arrived until the moment we left. The manager walked us through everything about the hostel, was fun with the kids, and was always there to answer questions or help with directions. The breakfast was excellent. There was loads of choice, and the Veggie sausages were done to perfection. The chef on duty in the morning was so kind to the kids, and got out games for them while I was loading up the car, and made sure they had enough to eat. The room was small, as we expected, but extremely clean and modern. The beds were clean and well made, and the toilet facilities were some of the cleanest and nicest of any hotel with shared facilities I've stayed in. The self-catering kitchen is quite small, but there's enough space for 2 or 3 couples to work in at once. A big fridge makes for a welcome place to store dairy and other perishables too.
The road up to the hostel is a little bumpy, and my car (an Audi) beached with a horrific crunch a few times on the way up. In the dark, with the rain lashing down, it took a few run-ups to get the car over the concrete hump at the bottom of the carpark to direct runoff rainwater, and the car scraped its belly as it went over. In the light of day, there was another way to do it, so if you have a low-suspension (ish) car, get out and survey the road when you get to the hostel. Everything else was absolutely perfect.

Location is perfect for exploring Helvelyn. Beautifully located hostel - sound of gushing water nearby was really soothing. Really friendly and helpful staff. Updated toilets and showers nicely finished. Crisp clean bed linen and warm duvets for cold nights. Good to have a private, family room. Loved the board games! One lovely staff member brought his own game in for us to try. Top bloke! Have stayed before - this was our second visit - would come again.
The road leading to the hostel is treacherous for small, low cars. Parking was slightly problematic when the hostel was full. Food was quite expensive. No food available if you were a late arrival - had to go to local pub, which also closed early, but they were very kind and made us sandwiches to take away. Kitchen could do with an update.

Amazing place - cheap as chips, we stayed in a landed (advertised as a tent on booking.com) great amenities - friendly staff of volunteers and stayovers... food was good quality, the location of the place is absolutely insane - plenty of walks and activities closely and VERY photogenic scenery. Due to the white noise from the river (had rained a lot) we slept for ten hours straight it was so comfortable - and bear in mind we stayed in April outside.
small checking in time window (due to staffing on this day only) - when the closest place to 'kill time' other than hiking is like 2 miles away.

The location for walkers is perfect. You're right in nature I mean in the morning I opened my window and watched and listened to water running from the mountain. The staff is very friendly and helpful , and the facilities are good. In the self service kitchen there's everything you need, you need to bring your own coffee or tea though if you like to get up very early. Breakfast 07 till 09 am.
If you don't have a car taxis won't take you to the hostel due to bad road. The place they drop you you must walk over a mile to reach your destination. Wi-fi was poor.

Lovely peaceful location near Glenridding. Good price for a 'twin room' which was quite big and actually had 3 sets of bunks, but only two of us in it. Drying room is a great facility in YHA hostels, if you've been out in the rain or have washed some clothes. I liked the option to buy breakfast & dinner from the hostel although I mainly used the self-catering kitchen. Excellent walking opportunities all around. We enjoyed a boat trip from Glenridding, including the option to disembark for a while for a walk.
The hostel is accessible by car but the track is very long and rough. The bar didn't have the local beer which it claimed to have. The toilets, basins & showers are mixed sex - the upstairs washbasin areas being open to the corridor. It was quite unnerving getting washed in that situation.

Loved it here. Really Remote. No noise from cars or roads at all. Just the river 😍 Friendly welcoming staff who were really polite and helpful and made me feel right at home. Lovely atmosphere. Great base to explore the hills around Patterdale and Glenridding. Lovely garden next to the river…peaceful. Will definitely be back. Thank you 🙏
Wi-Fi wasn’t great and no signal in the area but sometimes it’s not a bad thing :) just struggled to download a few online maps so make sure you do it before you come if you need to.

I made a heap of friends at this hostel, different ages. The man at the front desk was very friendly. The view was beautiful especially from the kitchen. Great place to stay especially to do the hikes.
Long steep walk to and from town. Turned up before check in to find that they don’t have someone at the desk 24/7 so I was waiting outside in the cold before some lovely guys let me in so I could wait for someone to attend the desk and assist.

The location was really feeling like heaven, with great staff and breakfast. The stream and waterfall nearby added to the natural feel.
Would be great if yha could add sign boards at multiple locations on the way to the hostel, as we felt like the light offroad track was not the actual way and caused a bit of confusion. Another suggestion would be to add individual power outlets for charging devices for each beds as it was far from all beds.

It was refurbished, very clean. Fantastic location for walkers.
The road up from Glenridding was awful, full of large potholes. But that isn’t part of the youth hostel of course. But it would have been nice of them to warn us about the very poor road leading up to them. We wished we’d had a 4x4, instead of our little Corsa. A word of warning from the youth hostel would have been nice, as they were aware of the road, travelling it every day…

Lovely hostel with basic but extremely clean rooms and shared bathroom facilities. Has a small bar and does great food. All the staff were helpful and polite. Lots of little nooks to sit if it’s rainy. Books and games available which is just as well as internet/phone reception not the best. Lots of info available about where to go in the gorgeous surrounding area.
No cons really - bit noisy at night and mixed bathrooms are … interesting! Nothing you shouldn’t be expecting in a hostel. All the other guests were friendly but quite serious about their activity holiday (which we really weren’t!) but there was no judgement (so far as I know anyway!) Beware ”road” up to hostel is gnarly - potholes and pebbles galore so go as slowly as possible - it’s a long drive up so when you think you’re nearly there, drive some more!
