Beautiful heritage style hotel. The room is spacious and the bed is amazing. We had a beautiful view over the lake and the hotel's garden from the room's balcony. The staff is friendly and helpful. If you want an amazing experience in the Lake District, this is the hotel you have to book. We had dinner at the hotel and the food was superb - well prepared and displayed. The parking facilities are excellent and is free to park your car for the duration of your stay.

great location, beautiful spot on the lake with lovely grounds

unfortunately the bar was closed due to a leak so the staff advised everyone to have drinks/bar snacks in the drawing/lounge rooms which was fine, however no staff from the restaurant came to take any orders or clear away any plates so it was a mess and we waited over an hour for drinks etc. if the bar was closed the bar staff should have been manning the other rooms to take orders and bring drinks through, we ending having to go and find someone to order and chase food/drinks every time. This only happened at dinner, breakfast serving staff were fantastic.

The country house feel of the hotel was excellent, set in extensive grounds with direct access to the lake. The staff were too class, friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. It was quiet. The evening meals were high class dining.

The breakfast left a lot to be desired. Thank heavens for the Stornoway black pudding because the sausages, tattie scones and bacon you could get better anywhere. And the coffee....well, if it is coffee, I'd be greatly surprised: we tried getting it stronger but that didn't help, we tried the proper coffee machine flat whites, still no good...just awful. Shame, because everything else was just great.

The grounds of the hotel are beautiful. Minimum guests as it was an off peak time in the lakes so the hotel was not that busy. Breakfast every morning was great, staff were nice and friendly. The view of the lake and hills from the breakfast room was stunning.

Our room was a bit dated. Tiles were old and the carpet in the room as well. Sound proofing isn't great. Could hear a baby awake in the room above us at 5am and the hotel being dog friendly, could hear dogs barking from a few.rooms down. Would still stay here again but I can imagine if the hotel was busier it would be quite noisy.

Location and views were absolutely fantastic, very quiet. Nice and clean throughout, plenty of lounging areas with open log fires. Staff were very nice.

Breakfast was good however to ask for additional fee for everything other than English cooked basic breakfast, bearing in mind the cost of the room, should not be asked. Evening menu very poor, same items practically every night. Very expensive if you have to ask for certain items to be left off due to dietary requirements. No chicken on menu at all and we were there for 3 nights! Very limited . Too far to go elsewhere to get anything to eat. No sleep 1st night at all due to noisy rad. Changed our room next day without any problems.

The hotel was well apportioned with a bar restaurant a large beautiful garden and good parking. The room was clean and the tea and coffee restocked every day. The food was very good, if expensive. Very dog friendly with nice staff.

The wi-fi was extremely poor. The “free” hotel wi-fi was available only if you gave unlimited permission to all your private information, so not really so free. Lots of items on the breakfast menu came with a hefty supplement. The lady on reception in the morning could have been more charming like the rest of the nice receptionist staff.

Stunning grounds and location on the banks of Ullswater Lake. Lovely rooms and communal areas including coal fires and Christmas decorations (December). Good food and lovely staff - especially in the dining room.

If you go just B&B the price of buying an evening meal is £60 each for 3 course then drinks on top! Too expensive. So we ate out. We would have stayed to eat in the hotel if it had been more reasonable prices (and they would have benefitted from income from drinks etc)? So they lost potential income IMHO.

Service generally (noting my "didn't like" comment below) & food fantastic Grounds stunning Room pretty, with beautiful balcony overlooking gardens

Very surly receptionist welcome (lady with greying long hair), who despite it being our honeymoon told us very abruptly "you can't checkin until 4pm". No "I am sorry but.. no would u like to go through to our bar for x.. awful customer service and 1st impression.. as was essential just "go away".. fortunately when we went back at 4 we were met by a lovely dark haired different lady.. who was amazing.. otherwise we were nearly considering going somewhere else!

Arrive at the property just after 6pm and even in the darkness - the grounds and house are amazing. The entrance is very welcoming and the Christmas decorations were beautiful. The reception staff so friendly and engaging with our toddler. Room had the cot set up and was a great size for the 3 of us. We had already had our evening meal, so a quick evening drink in the lounge area with friendly staff and bed for us. Morning started a bit early for us, and what a view to wake up to! - so an explore of the well maintained grounds and breath taking views of the lake and mountains. It was so peaceful and quiet - absolutely my favourite part of the day. Returned to the hotel for tasty breakfast with attentive staff.

Location Lovely building Fantastic setting

Bed was advertised as Queen but it was 2 large singles pushed together so was uncomfortable Dog’s barking No nice toiletries to pamper yourself apart from standard shower gel & shampoo Pretty basic breakfast choices unless you want to pay for upgrades which is cheeky as at £26 charge standard charge you’d think you’d get all included Service charges added to bar bill when you’ve been passed your drink at the bar also to drinks bought when eating dinner Room lovely but not exceptionally clean or replenished with clean crockery glasses water
