The quirkiness of the whole building, the room was super nice! Bit disorienting going to the loo in the dark with the floor sloping but I loved it. The en-suite was lovely and warm, the shower powerful and nice to have toiletries supplied. The bed was comfortable, a little too maybe as we were meant to be exploring, listening out for anything unusual but we slept like babies. The breakfast was delicious, certainly couldn’t eat all of it but anyone with a huge appetite would have been set for the day. Lots of choice and cooked really well. Location was great and not far at all for the QParking, felt the car was safe too. Staff were lovely, all friendly and we look forward to another stay in the future.

Nothing comes to mind, maybe that there were no ‘bumps in the night’ maybe next time.

It was a quirky/unique fantastic location room that was spotless. Staff were very friendly and able to get in and out anytime of the day and night as they gave you key food, and breakfast was very pleasant to would definitely stay again

My favourite place in York this and we've never stayed so decided we would this time. Love the feel of the place and how old and authentic it is , lots of ghost story's and we did actually see the scales in the bar move on there own one time but nothing on this occasion , we had the shambles room the staff were very welcoming nothing was too much trouble and brought an iron up to the room within minutes of me asking . Apparently the room has just been done out the bathroom is immaculate great shower really powerful and a stand alone bath but once again keeping that old authentic feel to it. Beautiful, the main room was just as nice tele in the Corner a nice sofa at the end of the bed and a nice soft carpet. Beautiful room one again with a really comfy double bed .well worth every penny . Will be back to try a different room next time .easily one of if not the best place I've stayed. Location was perfect too close to everything all the pubs and shops etc , even the car park was 4 minute walk.

If I had to say one thing and one thing only is we couldn't open the windows for fresh air so got a bit hot through the night there was a fan in the wardrobe though so I guess that's why lol ., I payed 28 quid for parking so throw in a free breakfast or discounted breakfast for that 😉 lol .

The building is beautiful and well cared for and the room (St catherines) was decorated sympathetically to the feel of the room. Floors are wonderfully sloping and rising in odd places. Atmospheric in the upmost and not atall bothered by pub noise down stairs as wall thickness tempers in down.

Absolutely nothing. Maybe the staff could tell you what's happening when you arrive because we filled out a form and were just left standing in the bar whilst people being served around us and no one telling us what we are waiting for. Then a chap turned up 10mins later to take us to the room. Not really an issue AT ALL but felt a bit silly standing there no knowing what's happening. DO NOT let this put you off at all. Just a heads up to the staff really.

The Black Fleece is full of Olde World character (boasting exposed beams, interesting architecture and wonky floors in abundance). Our room (Lady Peckett room) was charming and exceptionally clean, with a pod coffee machine, kettle and mini fridge supplied. The downstairs bar had the feel of a good old fashioned pub, proudly steeped with the history of York. We found that the staff were extremely friendly and helpful throughout our stay and that the hotel was located within walking distance of all of the major attractions of the city of York. There was entertainment on in the pub downstairs every night, yet we never heard any noise from downstairs when we were in our room. Breakfast was exceptional and extremely reasonably priced, and we opted to eat it here every morning of our stay. We are definitely planning to stay here on our next trip to York.

The absolute highlight of the stay was how immaculately clean the bathroom was. Polly, who cleaned our room is some kind of cleaning goddess, there was no dust in the corners (I'm sad enough that I checked after clocking the level of cleanliness because I assumed it couldn't be THAT clean), no mould in the shower, it was absolutely spotless and probably the cleanest bathroom I've ever had the pleasure to use. The room was just stunning. There were real(!) plants, a lovely sofa, a mirror on the coffee table so you could sit and do your makeup, nice wooden coat hangers (a small detail but comforting). It was like the staff had stayed in the room themselves and made it as comfortable as you would want your house to be. I didn't catch the manager's name unfortunately but she was really lovely. She briefed us really well when we checked in, reminding us to be careful interacting with others with the races being on, a heads up there was a band on at the pub that night (so it would be loud until midnight which was expected, it's a pub so you'd hope people would be having fun!) and giving us tips for places to go if we wanted a dance. She served us breakfast in the morning and was very kind guiding me around in my very half asleep, dazed state. She's also just a bloody lovely human in general, I felt really relaxed just being around her. Breakfast was nice, nothing too special but nice. They do a vegan breakfast which we were very happy about. The coffee machine wasn't working but we were told where we could grab a coffee (Greggs is next door) and given tips on where a good coffee is for after breakfast. The beer garden is lovely, gets some sun in the morning as well. I'd recommend the Golden Fleece to anyone staying in York. It's a bit pricey but, it's gorgeous - and it's amazing staying in a room travellers have been staying in for hundreds of years!

Nothing that isn't being stupidly picky or could be helped. The coffee machine not working was unfortunate but dealt with really well.

Alll the staff were very friendly and helpful. Always smiling and polite. Entering the room was a delight, so atmospheric with dimmed lighting, gorgeous bed and bits of quirkiness wherever ever you looked. The room at night was warm, the bed was so comfy even ghostly noises didn't keep us awake. Perfectly position at the bottom of the shambles you are central to all you need to do and see in York. Highly recommend a stay at The Golden Fleece.

Everything was perfect, not one complaint

I absolutely loved our room 'The Shambles'. So beautiful and with such quirky wonkiness. I felt so at home and slept better than i have slept for years. The bathroom - beautiful!!! The time you have in the morning for breakfast when the pub is shut, is nice so you can see the downstairs and all the marvels they have there in peace and quiet. The breakfast was pleasant. They swapped the fried eggs for poached eggs for us. All in all, i would definately stay there again, i would remember to take an extra bin bag, ( bins didn't get emptied ) A big tea mug, cos the cups are tiny, and your own supply of tea and coffee. I love love loved our room and how comfortable it is. Thank you Golden Fleece.

You definately feel like an inconvenience to the staff because the pub is so so busy. Check in was interesting because it was so busy, getting knocked about, and having to find our own way to our room, not knowing which one was actually ours. I love the fact you are basically left to your own devices, but when we asked the staff on 2 occasions for things, they never materialised. 1 was that we couldn't get the tv to work. The bar staff said he would send manager up, but forgot as he was so busy. Luckily my husband managed to retune everything and got it working. The next was on the 2nd morning we asked for more tea and coffee, and that never materialised either.

The room was just stunning . We loved it so much we have booked for next year too.

The day staff were understaffed , although Rachel and the chap she worked with were amazing . The evening staff , there was more staff working . One particular staff member serving the food huffed a lot and the evening food was well below standard even for basic pub grub. However next year we will eat at the other restaurants by the Riverside where the food was cheaper and so much better portion wise and standard . Hadn’t put us off staying at the Golden Fleece .

Property was nice and clean beds was comfortable. Bathroom was also very clean and staff were friendly and helpful.

It was over a pub so noise was heard even the your on the 1st floor. Not too loud but still a little noisy. Property is actually haunted. We heard someone walking up and down the starts at 3am no workers work at that time. Then at the exact same time we heard our bag of chips moving by itself.
