The room was clean and the bed and pillows were very comfortable. It is also a great central location for everything in York.

The bar staff were very rude to everybody they served. We had two separate couples at the side of us, complaining about "all three" of the bar staff, and we too found them very surly. However, the reception staff and the morning breakfast team, were polite and helpful.

Out twin room was (I was told) the only twin in the hotel - therefore no other choice available. However, the size was reasonable, the beds were comfortable, the bathroom was excellent with a full size bath and large shower space, plus we had big fluffy towels refreshed each day. The breakfasts were excellent, in fact the main course was really too much, but I'm a woman with a relatively small tummy, and we weren't complaining !!!

THE NOISE !! Unfortunately our bedroom overlooked the area where the hotel stores its bins. The staff emptied all the glass bottles into big bins and very unwelcome times of day and night. Also people would wander into this small area to smoke - most unpleasant when we wanted the window open and the smell intruded into our room. There is also a store room right opposite our bedroom and staff were going in and out, again, at all times of day and evening. I WOULD HAVE TO ASK FOR A DIFFERENT ROOM. That's for sure.

Great hosting and waiting staff, delicious breakfast and dinner, central prime location to the city attractions. There was a car park conveniently located only a short walk along the river.

Room not clean to a 5* standard (dirty under bed, mildew in shower, cobwebs and dust). Duvet cover did not fit over duvet properly, no amenities in eye mask and ear plug pouch. ‘Terrace’ room was an outbuilding directly across from glass sided restaurant, meaning we could not open blinds at any point meaning it felt a little confined.

The location was amazing—just walking distance from everything and right in the heart of the city. I would definitely go back to this hotel.

The room we took wasn’t in the main building but had its own entrance, which was a nice touch. However, it had a slight musty odor, like an "old" smell from humidity, though it was incredibly cozy overall—I loved the room. The continental breakfast was a bit sparse, but it had the essentials. The included cooked breakfast (I chose the full English) was just amazing. The staff were generally nice, though when we arrived early, we had to wait until 3 PM to check in. This was the only hotel on our UK tour that couldn’t accommodate an early check-in—they were a bit strict about it.

Excellent location, a short walk from the main station and easy access to the heart of the city. It's a quirky place with a unique staircase and lovely ambiance throughout. We were upgraded to the main building from the courtyard and our room was most comfortable. The staff were very friendly and a big shout out to the men working in the bar who went beyond my expectation for late night hot chocolate and rum! The breakfast was of an excellent quality and plentiful. Would definitely recommend for a city break!

No fridge in the room but fresh milk available

Lodge is a great place in terms of location , restaurant and cellar , if one interested . Room is very spacious with all one needs for the stay . Bed is very comfortable , tea and coffee , cookies , and milk that is delivered to the room for your morning as well . Breakfast was very tasty

My room # 10 was facing the courtyard where there are at least 20 -30 outdoor tables that are sitting companies of people who are just having drinks after 4-5 pm until probably at least 11 pm . It is loud … room is super hot , as it has 2 windows facing West and there are dumpsters under the windows . U can only open tiny bit of windows to air the room and it isn’t helping . Luckily I was exhausted that day and felt asleep despite all the noise . 4 am garbage and cleaning trucks woke me up and noise was going for a while . At this point it is better just to get up .

A very warm Yorkshire welcome from the moment we asked if we could drop our bags off early. Vicky was very friendly and picked up on a comment I made about our visit being for my mum's birthday. When we checked in later and went to our room there was a card and a bottle of fizz. My mum was overwhelmed by the gesture. The room was lovely - clean, well maintained, very comfortable bed, with all the extras and attention to detail that you would expect from a 5* hotel. All staff were proactive in anticipating any needs we may have had. We had dinner in the bar as well as breakfast. The food was fresh, high quality ingredients - we recommend the fish and chips. There was a very good choice at breakfast and, again, served by attentive staff.

The only thing that may cause an issue for some is the room (Clerks office) is within earshot of the delivery area so we heard some movement of bins/kegs. However this was around 11pm and 7am so didn't affect our quality of sleep (earplugs are supplied if you are a light sleeper).

Big kitchen so the cook wasn't alone, 2 reception rooms so a group of 6 didn't always have to be doing the same activity. Comfortable bedrooms.

Only one bathroom was a minor annoyance, but slightly worse was how wet the floor became after a shower, especially as the 4 millennial in our party all shower every day and not necessarily very quickly. In the kitchen we would have appreciated 2 more tea-towels a set of oven gloves, a dish-drying rack and a washing-up bowl. The wine glasses were too big to fit in the dishwasher, so needed to be done by hand

Newly renovated room, perfect location in York. Very clean and comfortable. The restaurant/pub was very popular so reservations need to be made in advance.

Our room was in the courtyard right outside the pub, so the blinds had to stay closed unless we wanted the table outside to see in. When we checked in I thought it was going to be a problem with the noise at bedtime, but it actually wasn't, they must have stopped seating people there in the evening. It wasn't a concern for us at all, just something to be mindful of.

Staff couldn't be more helpful. Don't do breakfast, but when I did, catered to my request. Bed wonderful. Food good- especially the "small ploughman's", which made an exceptional lunch. For someone with a not obvious disability, the location was excellent for the services/shops I required. I appreciate The Judge's can't organise the weather, but loved spending my spare time in the courtyard, people watching, on this occasion, in glorious sunshine. By way of comparison, I had a couple nights at a 5star in London in February, plus a show and it cost less than my 3 nights in York, but I know where I'd rather be. (York).

Shower difficult to use. Being a country boy, the first night was very noisy , but next two, an excellent sleep. NEXT TIME, I'll have a room with a bath.
