We kept saying that this hotel was a hidden gem, it's tucked away behind a very busy road, but when you enter the court yard you are transported into a calm oasis of utter beauty. The building is very very old and the history is very well explained on the website. The garden has exclusive access to the wall which surrounds the inner city of York, a beautiful area to just sit and relax after a busy day visiting all the wonderful sites of the city. I must mention the staff who were without exception the best we have ever had the pleasure of meeting. Nothing was too much trouble even down to a little packed lunch to bid us farewell.

The location of the hotel is unbeatable, right next to the Minster and York's city walls. The building is impressive, the garden is beautiful, the staff very friendly, breakfast delicious. You are in the middle of an atmospheric oasis. We would also like to mention the pictures, which touched and surprised us with memories of a very special lion and his unique story. Also seeing pictures of George Adamson was amazing.

Clyf Room was cozy, but a little dark. Something looked like a repair in the wall right next to a window, which was a bit disturbing.

Reception staff were excellent and gave us their full attention at all times. The room was lovely and very clean but strangely lacking a place to hang wet coats as it had been raining. The bathroom and also very clean and the rain shower exceptional and there was a selection of free toiletries. We did not have dinner as is was Easter Sunday and the restaurant was closed so the receptionist gave us their top three eateries to try - all within a 2 minute walk. Plenty to pick from on the very good breakfast menu and the food was freshly prepared. Location was superb, next to the Minster and there was parking in the Grays Court yard (chargeable) which was a huge bonus.

I could not say anything negative about our stay in April as it was very very pleasant but I note there is no air conditioning in the rooms so it might be a little hot in the mid summer - As we are regular visitors to York we will have to try it and see for my birthday in July.

The location is very convenient, in a courtyard with beautiful gardens. We loved the historic ambience of the building and the view of the gardens from the huge French doors on the first floor. The staff were all wonderful and couldn't do enough for us. The breakfasts were excellent. The Clarins toiletries in the bathroom.

We asked for a parking space and there was no problem, but we were charged at £20 per night on our bill at the end of the stay. There was no mention of a charge when I originally asked for the space. The only dinner menu was a 12 -course Tasting Menu.

Beautiful clarins products in bathroom, very friendly and professional staff, and stunning building. Decor beautiful with lovely photographs and goreous rugs! Comfy bed and very nice coffee in the room..

The tables in the breakfast room brought down the high quality of the rest of the building. They're a bit mediocre and not stylish. Our vegan breakfasts were nice, but they lacked imagination, were small portions, and the avocado mash was too lemony.

A hidden treasure for visiting York. A lovely hotel with a warm welcome. The room we had was individual and spacious, a little quirky (the bathroom was upstairs!) Comfortable bed and a modern bathroom. The breakfast was delicious, simply cooked and well presented. Lovely coffee. Will definitely be returning ,for longer so that we can try out the restaurant which was unfortunately not open on a Monday evening.

Superb venue right in the centre of town , reception and bar staff were absolutely excellent and nothing was too much trouble

Didn’t enjoy dinner unfortunately. Unless having the 9 course taster meal, (we had the a la carte menu which wasn’t cheap ) we felt a bit ignored and service was a little lacking and hit and miss

Well located near York minster. Old country house feel, full of character. Very pleasant staff.

For the price, our room was a little disappointing and the bed was not very comfortable. In the evening the only option for dinner was the £125 per head tasting menu. Would have been nice to have an alternative menu for guests who don’t want to eat in the restaurant.

Breakfast was lovely, homemade jam and marmalade exceptional. Staff very friendly and nothing a hassle, very appreciative to them.

The TV light flashed in the middle of the night waking me up and could not be resolved until the morning with locating the mains. Switching on and off but disruptive. The view could have been better from the room.

We loved everything about Gray's court. The historical building, the decor, the friendly helpful staff, the garden, the private access to the wall, the restaurant in Grays court where you get breakfast or book a fabulous taste menu dinner.

It would have been nice if there was air-conditioning, but we understand that given its a grade 1 building, air conditioning could not be installed.
