Very close to the station/shops and cafes. Curtains for privacy in the shared rooms. Easy, quick check in. Cheapest hostel I've ever been to (if booked directly). The deluxe room was so cheap and well worth the money.

The smell of sewer from the sink/toilet was strong. Couldn't find a plug socket to charge my phone despite asking staff. There wasn't any way to charge my phone from the top bunk. You have to pay extra for luggage storage, shower gel and towels. No elevators, be prepared to carry your luggage up 3 flights of stairs.

Stayed in a 'wow'fully insta-worthy Victorian building with flowing carpeted staircases, chandeliers, paintings on the walls, patios & all rooms with high ceilings....this is an experience for a hostel.....one won't even get this property in a hotel! The reception/lobby was doubled up as a bar counter, very nicely decorated during the Christmas. Comfy bed with 4-sided private curtains were a plus for privacy - this was a selection criteria before my booking, very satisfied. Located close from the 10min walk York train station, 3-4min from the bus stops, a stone-throw away from The MickleBar Gate & the historic wall. The location is cool 10-12min walk to the Old town/Shambles & additional 3 min to the Minster. Ensuite bathroom is handy. Surrounded by many cool pubs, high-end dining places & uber cafes, safe surrounding....ALL THESE in a very low price per night. What more does a travel wants! 100% coming back again!

Had an ensuite bathroom in our room, but that was toooo small in size, could have been slightly bigger. But, at this price point, I take it.

Great location and wonderful building!

I don't often write negative reviews about hostels unless there is a dark spot smeered across a relatively shiny glass. Hats off to the manager Lee and also the lovely lady who checked me, Riley. Sadly, there was another receptionist, Anna, I believe, who showed little interest in helping me resolve a minor issue and basically threw at all protocol of guest-staff curtsey. The attitude was abysmal, and as someone who works in a hostel, I must say, this one needs to be sent back to school or at least trained on how to resolve basic issues. Terrible, God bless all those who need this one to troubleshoot any glitch regarding basic necessities. Again, I must stress the other staff are great.

The location was excellent , right near the train station and a short walk into the main city of York , The staff were great , the facility were good , we booked a private room for four with our own bathroom , comfortable room and beds , very cheap price for us all , surprisingly had tea and coffee facilities in the room , which was a welcome treat . They also have a luggage room for a small fee , so you don’t have to carry your bags round all day before or after checking in 👍🏻 .

It wasn’t disabled friendly , I just about managed , but I couldn’t have stayed for a week , also the room we had was in the basement , so had a slight smell of damp (understandably) it’s a very old building , the room did have a dehumidifier though , having said all this , if I wanted a room in York for a night or two again , I would book here again . It was purely because I have arthritis that I struggled .

Bed comfortable. Bedding of good quality. Ensuite convenient. Smooth check-in and check-out. Staff were welcoming and friendly. Location not far from train station or the city cently. Historical building.

Room 12 ... The laminate outside the ensuite can get wet and slippery. Please be mindful that this may cause an accident. The room was stuffy the day I stayed in September. There were 2 sash windows, fresh air was accessible from only one and this could only be lifted about 8 inches and it was difficult to get it to stay in position, this needs attention. Three sets of bunks would be better than four for the size of this room because one set obscures the natural light from one window.

Location is great, just a few minutes walk to train, bus and great historic sights! I had a 5 hour flight delay, so I didn't arrive until 9 am the next morning at Safestay. They let me have another bed until 2pm for 5£ more so I could get a wee nap in as I had no sleep, stuck at an airport. And I was given a chocolate croissant later on. The staff were just being nice and caring! I was allowed to store my luggage after, while enjoying York for a few hours. And you can't beat the price! I've been twice before and will be back next year for a longer stay! Can't wait!

The place was great overall. The staff was pleasant and helpful. It was a 10 bed hostel room so it wasn't really good place for a romantic getaway in spite of the couple in the room who did share a bunk. The location was excellent with a lot to see and do very close by. I didn't love the stairs but they weren't a big deal since I was averaging 16k steps a day. Overall, I'd stay there again and recommend it to anyone else.

My only beef was my other roommates. They were fairly rude but that's not the fault of the facility. Also, the room was on floor 2. The ground floor was floor 0 so in American terms is was actually the third floor. A little unpleasant to climb with my bags but not terrible.

The building and location we perfect. Very cheap hostel considering its location, how central it is and the building was immaculately clean. Beds were comfortable and the curtains provided privacy whilst sleeping

The advert stated tea and coffee making facilities. This isnt correct. You can ask for hot water only at the bar. Stating that there are facilities makes you think that there is ready access to water, teabags etc that you can use yourself. However to have these you need to pay for an actual cup of tea/coffee.

Extremely affordable hostel for a very central York location. I have stayed at this property numerous times and never had a bad experience. Privacy curtains on the bed are a big plus; bafflingly a lot of hostels still don’t have them! The breakfast is decent enough and similarly affordable. Check-in has always been hassle free and the staff are friendly. If you don’t mind staying in shared accommodation then this hostel/hotel is ideal for a night out or for concerts or events in town. Haven’t stayed in their private rooms but know they do offer them too!

The building leaves a little to be desired in terms of overall upkeep but I suspect this has to do with the age of the property. Facilities, particularly the bathrooms, have been somewhat hit and miss in the past.

Had a really creepy guy in the first room I was with (12 bed mixed dorm) asked if there was anything I was able to do to get a room swap I said sure and I’ll pay whatever, they upgraded me for free to an 8 bed female only and they were so lovely, helped me quickly move my stuff out of one room into the other even though it was later at night 10/10

They listed that there is a microwave and kettle, but unfortunately there isn’t, to get hot water you have to ask the bar which is frustrating and there’s also no kitchen
