booked twin room and arrived to find large spacious room with a single and kingsize ( possibly even supering) bed- think it was made up of two more single beds. Very comfortable and clean. TV which had radio stations too, large wardrobe ( plenty of hangers , iron and ironing board) bathroom with shower over the bath. Had not booked breakfast but in the morning we decided to enjoy it there and though they wanted to know the night before they took our order with no issues. Continental ( £7.50)- pastries, cereals, bread, crumpets, fruit juice and fresh fruit with tea and coffee or add a cooked meal ( I had delicious poached eggs and bacon on sourdough toast with hollandaise sauce and my friend had the full english with sausages, eggs, bacon, has browns, mushrooms, tomato and beans) (£12.50). Staff there were very friendly and helpful. Free parking - just give your registration when you check in.
We were told the door would not lock from the outside and told to twist the lock on the inside of the door and then pull the door shut! Easy once we knew and no issues. Shower - we could not get it to work at all - seemed welded shut but a quick trip to reception and the receptionist came up to the room, apologised and then used brute force and get it working! She said she'd get maintenance to look at it and no other issues.

Food was nice but a bit disappointed they didn't have a few things on the lunch menu that we wanted but had the roast beef Yorkshire pudding was lovely potatoes were nice but some werea bit to crunchy to eat but was an ok meal room was nice and clean staff were very friendly
Shower was not good and the room smelt of perfume and as my husband is allergic to some smells wasn't very happy, also there was a car prk light right outside our room so when we turned the lights off the whole room was lit up so black out curtains would have been good and the room was a long way from the stairs and a long walk I'm disabled and I had to go up and down the stairs a few times so l was in a bit of pain by the end of my stay, unfortunately due to the amount of pet friendly rooms being on the 1st floor we had the room which was a very long walk to get downstairs so as much as it was a pleasant place to stay don't think we'd stay again

I have stayed in a lot of Hotels and this one was very good VFM. Staff were excellent. The Hotel was large yet well kept for an old building .Car parking very good and easy. The Hotel was clean and staff ere proud to make sure all was good for you without being pushy. Food was great value for money and well done. Short walk from the Station and ideal for a south coast meeting place. Place felt cosy and was warm on a very cold day. A point to mention was that the Christmas decorations were all up and looked stunning a great job and not just stuck up in a Pub: a lot of care and would rival any venue.
Nothing..........

This stay was a lot better than when I stayed last time. Last time I felt like an inconvenience, this time I felt welcomed. This time I paid for a bigger room as the single room was really small. The gentleman who checked me in kindly carried my case to my room. I ate in the pub and the lady behind the bar was so welcoming and friendly. The food at both breakfast and dinner was lovely.
The building is really old which has its charm but it could really do with some refurbishment. The floors are uneven, the pipe work/taps are random and noisy and the beds aren't the comfiest.

Comfortable King size bed. Room was clean. Large car park at the rear of the premises. All the staff were attentive and very pleasant during our stay. Good full English breakfast cooked to order. Surprisingly quiet location. We needed to be in Portsmouth all day and found the Bear Hotel a lot cheaper than Portsmouth Hotels, just a 5 min walk to the railway station and a short journey into Portsmouth Harbour. In addition with good parking at the Bear Hotel, no worries over difficult and expensive parking in Portsmouth. A great result!
Personally when using a shower over the bath I do like something to grasp when stepping out of the bath with wet feet. Stainless steel grab handles are ideal and could prevent a nasty accident. Much better than non slip rubber bath mats which always look a bit slimy and unhygienic to me.

Good rooms, friendly staff, good food. Older hotel (with pub and restaurant) where they don't try the hide the fact. Has all the basic mod/cons you need. I like that not everything is hyper modern. Very good cooked or continental breakfast.
Visiting on a few cold and wet days in the beginning of October, the heating was on way to high for my taste. Had to open the window of the room during the night as even with the central heating radiators closed it was unconfortably warm in the room when sleeping. And in the restaurant I was happy with just a T on. Putting a shirt on top would have made me swet!

Massive single room with everything I needed. Enjoyed the cooked breakfast (but no mushrooms, no orange juice), but really liked the smoked salmon and scrambled egg option. Oldie worldie feel to the building. Hotel chosen for public transport options: train FROM Bournemouth where my plane came in, train to Gunwharf Portsmouth and to Fareham, and bus to various local places. A lot of info on arrival, so appreciated the slip of paper with all the door codes and wi-fi etc Restaurant very convenient for a good evening meal, with its own bar and comfy seating area.
No complaints, just a few niggles. There wasn't much of a system when coming down to breakfast, not sure who to tell I'd arrived or who to order with. The amount of coffee provided in the ONE communal jug seemed way too small for the number of clients at breakfast. This meant several times people were standing around waiting for a hot drink, not sure what was going on. Perhaps a second jug would help ? 2 days there were no mushrooms, even though Waitrose was round the corner, and no orange juice (just apple) on 3 days.
