This is the place I always stay when in Launceston. It is conveniently located--only a block up from the city centre, with its eateries, shops and the Princess Theatre. The Balmoral on York offers free off-street parking. My room--as usual--was quiet, very clean, well-designed and -furnished (with a two-seater sofa, good lighting, a table and chairs, quiet, a fridge and even a footrest). WiFi and TV were good. The hot water was instant, the shower excellent and the bed comfy. Oh, and the window could be opened!
Of the only two negatives, the first was just that the loo [toilet] paper was thin. The second I see as a fad everywhere nowadays: The bedding consisted of but a bottom sheet, a top sheet and a thick, covered doona [eiderdown]. Sheets alone are fine for a summer night and a doona is welcome in winter...but what about all the months between the extremes? All night one starts with the doona up, then tosses it off, then drags it back on.... A couple of cotton blankets instead would be most welcome--if laughably old-fashioned.

This hotel is situated very close to all the amenities of Launceston. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. Washing and tumble drying facilities were really good and at a nominal price. Parking was included in the price and off road which was very convenient.
We had a front facing room which seemed to be single glazed. Although the road wasn't too busy at night, any cars driving by could be easily heard. Unfortunately for us, and maybe we were very unlucky, but cars were racing/cruising around the block for a couple of hours in the early hours of the morning on two of the nights during our stay. This was obviously not the fault of the hotel but meant we had very little sleep. If we'd been at the back of the hotel, this wouldn't have been an issue.

The accommodation is great! It's clean and hygienic. The FREE breakfast is basic but good, with yogurt and lots of fruit, along with packaged jam, butter, and peanut butter. Coffee and tea . That’s it. The rooms are clean and spacious. The most important thing is that parking is free, and you can even leave your car parked after check-out. The hotel is situated on a hill, so be ready for some uphill climbs, drive in low gear. Keep in mind that parking is paid everywhere. The best thing about this hotel is that it's within walking distance of all the attractions. The city is like an open-air storybook, with beautiful historic buildings from the 18th to the 19th century in Victorian style. The Cataract Gorge is also nearby, a 37-minute walk away. Just be prepared for a steep incline, so consider driving or taking a bus. But remember, if you drive, you'll have to pay for parking. Overall, it's worth visiting the 2 Victoria museums, dining spots like Nepalese and Sri Lankan were my favorites.

+ Large rooms + Free parking (with overflow space out back) + CCTV + My booking came with continental breakfast which was great value (pay extra for hot food or barista coffee). Continental breakfast had some fruits (canned and fresh), yoghuts, 2/3 cereal/muselis with milk and toast with 2/3 different spreads. All you need really for a basic breakfast to get you going!! + Comfortable with all the basic amenities like iron/hairdryer,kettle,fridge
- Staff completely no response from emails like what? Really BAD I should rate them down for this but didn't (you can see how they also never seem to respond to reviews either). Night staff was a bit more helpful no issues there - Can get noisy but I think it's just the city being so quiet that loud noises carry. I could hear cars screeching around the neighbourhood in the distance for a large part of the night. I think this would be similar in a lot of accomodation though (but this is an older building with a little less soundproofing - The rooms are dated so it doesn't feel as clean, bit of dust under and around the bed as well as the sofa - At $180ish each night there were better options in town offering just as much if not more

Tim met us when we checked in. He was friendly and helpful about directions of where to visit. (He was also a dynamo during breakfast the next day - exhausting to watch as he cleaned up, took orders and kept on top of the buffet supplies, which, incidentally were ample). The room had been recently renovated and it overlooked the city. Comfortable bed and enough room for us to spread out for 5 days. A washer and dryer on the premises was a bonus. 10 - 15 minute walk to restaurants and shops. Downhill on the way - uphill on return- giving us some much needed exercise! Our favourite meal was at Monsoon - thoroughly recommend it.

On arrival the friendly reception Danny was a delight, Tim the owner was all hands on deck , whether in the kitchen , doing laundry , on reception or renovating . He’s a busy man , very helpful , leads by example to his staff , all of whom were great. Full credit to Tim . The breakfast was excellent, a wonderful choice of fresh fruit, ample choices in cereals and toast varieties and the boiled eggs were a treat . Breakfast was my highlight of the day . The room was modern , very clean, great views and a wonderful comfortable bed .
Walls a bit thin but that can’t be helped in an older building

Great hotel close to the city centre of Launceston with complimentary onsite parking. We were warmly welcomed by Tim (the owner) who was more than happy to provide some info on what to see and do during our visit. Our room was spacious, clean, quiet and had all the amenities we needed for a relaxing stay. Especially loved the super comfortable bed and the quality towels. We had a continental breakfast included and were quite impressed with what was available (fresh fruit, juice, cereal, yoghurt, fruit loaf, toast, coffee, tea) - it was a nice way to start the day. The hotel is undergoing some renovation at the moment (which we noted), but it actually didn’t affect our stay at all (minimal noise and we were out exploring most of the day). Location is excellent. Easy walking distance to the centre and (for those that like to walk a little further) only a couple of kms to the start of the Cataract Gorge. Overall a great experience and we’d definitely recommend if you’re staying in Launceston.

Location: it is a good location and not far away from the restaurants. Breakfast: a good variety to choose from. The area is clean and the team cleans up the table very quickly once it is available. They are also accommodating even though we were a bit late. Staff: the owner and the team are friendly and working very hard. The owner has also recommended us some nice places & restaurants to go. Parking: Free open space parking which is fine. Only 1 spot is awkward if you have a big car.
Room: it was yet to be renovated. It is still a very clean room. But the design of the separate shower room is not great. It is tiny and nothing to stop the water splashing on the floor. The floor was so wet that the cotton floor mat soaked up all the water. I doubt anything can do to improve it. I was just “lucky” that I got this strange room. The other room my relative stayed at was fine. Noise: my room is facing the main road. If you sleep early, you probably not like it as the noises of the cars with big exhaust pipes flying up and down during the night. But it stopped by midnight!

Airy, refurbished room, comfy bed and good shower facilities. Excellent buffet breakfast included in the price with the option to upgrade to a cooked breafast. Freindly staff and great view of the city from our bedroom window. Plenty of eating places within reasonable walking distance.
The entrance to the rear carpark was through an archway in the building and on an steep incline. A sign requesting guests to park their cars before entering the reception to register would have been helpful. It was very hot during our stay and couple of times we were stuck on the incline while people registered. Not pleasant. Also a sign advising that the parking was for guests only as we saw peolpe parking their cars then not entering the building. There are parking meters throughout the area so parking spots are at a premium.

Fantastic position, short walk to everything. The room had everything you could need and was very spacious and clean. The free car parking was excellent. Continental breakfast was included or you could pay $15 for a full cooked breakfast. The staff continually filled up anything running low at breakfast and there was a great selection of chopped fresh fruit. The laundry was great and very quick and only cost us $6 to wash and dry a large load of washing. All the staff were super friendly and efficient and provided some great recommendations on things to do and dining options.
