The Hotel has a great location for exploring Durham, the room was very clean, the staff are very helpful and friendly.
Rooms are looking dated, dark brown furniture very old fashioned, our biggest issue was with breakfast, on the first day we waited ten minutes to be seated, eventually we just walked in, the rest of the week was hit and miss as to someone sitting you down, the cost of the breakfast was £18, the choice was very limited and the food was always just tepid, on occasions we had to try and find a member of staff to top up items of food, I would suggest eating elsewhere at a lower price and far better quality.

Staff were friendly and helpful. We liked the furniture in the rooms, and they were well equipped too. Excellent location.
The breakfast was not too varied (no fresh vegetables, for example), and some dishes were not very tasty (scrambled eggs, sausage). When my card was charged, it was 150 pounds more than the price. This is because of the hotel holding 50 GBP/night for any spending we might do. This is fine, but we were not informed, so it was a bit of a hassle figuring this out with the receptionist (who was very nice and polite). As we did not spend any of it, it was duly returned to us, so no great issues, just the lack of information.

The location for Durham is excellent. Right in the centre for walks through the city , around the river and of course, around the cathedral and castle. Great little coffee shop , ‘Flat White Kitchen.’ Also good for breakfasts etc. The breakfast was good and staff were helpful.
Car parking was a little difficult at times and some inconsiderate driver managed to park us in , which delayed us seeing family and meant we had to get (and pay) for a taxi. The car park no longer belongs to the hotel apparently and anyone can park there.

Lovely location, just where we needed to be.close to the charms of the city centre, Cathedral and Castle within easy walking distance. We had a really spacious family room on the ground floor with two double beds, a living area with a bed settee and two large flat screen tv's. Bathroom with a shower over the bath and a fridge in cupboard under a tv. Very peaceful rooms, no trouble sleeping, air conditioning units in both rooms
Tv in the living area would turn itself off intermittently. The shower screen leaked water onto the bathroom floor, as seals were poorly fitted Beds were comfortable enough, but we did experience some back pain

I asked for a room with a walk in shower and was very pleased with the room. I liked the location of the hotel which I have used for over 30 years. I was very impressed with reception who went beyond what I expected, all were attentive to my needs. All other staff were pleasant. I also liked the quality of the one bar meal I had.
I was very pleased to be allocated the room but quite unimpressed with the view which consisted of a wall and scaffolding outside the window. Next time I will seek a higher quality riverside room with walk in shower Breakfasts were great, I did not like the small plates for breakfast was worried one small slip could mean scattering food

The property was so comfortable and so very close to the centre of Durham. The standout for us was the excellent service of the staff. Every staff member we encountered went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable. They were so positive welcoming and responsive. We even received a Christmas stocking with sweet treats on our door on Christmas morning . Thank you Delta Hotels Marriott Durham Royal county for making our family Christmas in Durham so special and lovely.

Super comfortable bed, linen and pillows, 5 star stuff. Excellent location right in the centre of the city. Staff were helpful, professional, personable. The £5 nightcap in the bar was a nice offering. The car park was easy to use, and had space on a busy night, and was for a full 24 hours, which made the next day a lot easier for us.
The price on our night was 2 times more than the next night, and 3 times more than an off peak night. This really stung and was disappointing, but I understand the hotel was busy. I thought most double rooms could convert to twin beds, but this is not the case. It is not the hotel's fault, they do offer twin beds for bigger, King, rooms.

English breakfast is served in a long room with a view onto the street, it was delicious with many options. The bed was comfortable with a pillow menu, there were enough mirrors, lighting and storage, & the showers were hot. My room had a good view of the River Wear & rowers. There was a downstairs bar with a snack menu. There was a dry-cleaning service & brochures about local attractions and night events. I drove to Raby castle built in the late 1300s (30+ minutes away) to see the original castle of my ancestors, the powerful Neville family, parents of Richard III. Raby castle has a cafe in a cute yurt with a good lunch menu. The current owner family have restored a few of the 100+ rooms. The Marriott hotel is close to many pubs like the Swan and Three Cygnets, or the Half Moon Inn which had weekend bands. It's across the road from the Indigo hotel which houses a Marco Pierre White restaurant, inside the beautiful old domed town hall chambers. The menu is extensive & staff are very attentive to issues such as food intolerance. Durham Castle & cathedral are close to each other about 1 km away. The cathedral contains the remains of St. Cuthbert, probably England's first monk, & St. Bede, England's 1st chronicler. Two effigies of the Nevilles (sans their heads) are inside with beautiful stained glass windows. You'll find many school groups. There are staff dressed in purple to guide & assist you. You can have a good meal in the cathedral cafe where they pay great attention to food intolerances or allergies, and then naturally purchase souvenirs from the gift shop. If you like detective novels, you can buy novels by M M Hudson, set in Durham, from the Indigo & probably elsewhere.
Getting from my room on the 1st floor to reception was complex, if you had a mobility problem as I did temporarily on this trip. You had to walk down a corridor to the lift, go up to the 2nd floor! go down another corridor to a lift, down to the ground floor, then a corridor to reception. I suppose this was because the hotel was constructed from several buildings. Brollies were available, but on a 48 hr rental basis. The car park had a charge.

The staff were absolutely outstanding. The man at the front desk was friendly, polite, genuine and extremely helpful and understanding. Even the cleaner we bumped into in the hall way was extremely nice, genuine and helpful. Can’t say enough for the staff. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. The location to Durham city centre is almost perfect. Just cross a bridge and you’re there amongst it all.
The tv didn’t have Amazon, Netflix or much of any streaming service installed. Not a big issue for me personally but would have been nice to see.

Staff were wonderful, helpful, interested in our visit and keen to ensure we had everything we needed. Room was beautiful with an enormous bed! View of river perfect, especially with the Autumn leaves in abundance on the trees. Central location with interesting architecture all around and easy access to all the Durham sights.
Tiny detail - would have liked fresh milk in the room to have with the coffee, and would have preferred fresh milk in the coffee machine at breakfast. Staff were quick to help find a solution though so not a problem.
