The hotel dates back to an earlier age! The stained glass windows in the dining room have been retained and are beautiful. The outside appearance is beautiful, as is the reception area.
The decor is a bit tired. The ‘grandeur’ of the exterior is not reflected in the Formica topped tables in the dining room and the utilitarian type chairs. The paintwork is tired and dull. Our room was on the third floor, number 350 I think. It was described as a superior room and was perfectly adequate but poky enough. The approach along narrow, shabby corridors was not an overly pleasant experience. On the whole the staff were friendly, polite and helpful, especially in reception but there was one young man in the dining room who needed a few lessons in social etiquette! ( Unfortunate how one unpleasant experience often leaves a lasting and bad one).

Everyone at the hotel was super friendly. All the staff members had a nice, welcoming aura and were very helpful. They made the check in and check out process efficient. The breakfast option was also excellent. Overall, if you’re looking for a cheap stay in Harrogate, then this is the perfect place.
It’s a very old property, and though some people might prefer more of an older property due to the entire “vintage” side of it, I think some things genuinely need changing: the rooms are quite dull, and the lighting didn’t work properly. There was a punch in the wall, and the floorboards creaked a lot. The temperature of the water in the bathroom was also VERY hot, to the point where it burns your skin, so that needs reviewing. But, despite these things, it was a comfortable place to stay in, and these few things just need to be updated so the hotel is even better. Add a bit more light and colour in there and it will definitely seem like a more welcoming place.

It is an old but welcoming, the sheer size makes you wonder if it can compete with the modern day premier inn/travel lodge etc, in fact it does more for you than any Travel hotels. You can get lost in its space, nobody is in your way and being at an age when these were built, you see why it can still perform, the rooms are spacious the plumbing is old but still efficient and everything works. Enter the dining room, massive, plenty of room for everyone and still more besides, staff move quickly and perform with ease, serving you coffee/tea as you sit down, nothing is left to chance, the breakfast is full English, none of this continental fare and plenty of it with seconds if required. All in all we will keep coming back to this chain of hotels as they all have the edge over other hotels.
As above.

In a word , everything. For a 3☆ hotel , with breakfast and parking included , this hotel was superb value for money . Its an old hotel , with expected ware & tear . Some people in their reviews expect a 5☆ hotel , for 3☆ price , which is ridiculous . We managed to check in a couple of hours early, and all the staff from start to finish, could not have been more friendly & helpful. We had two single rooms that had everything you could wish for , with a hot & powerful shower . I cannot recommend this hotel enough. Other similar ones charge up to £15 a night , just to park . It's just a short walk from the centre , and I look forward to visiting again
Nothing whatsoever

The location is easily accessible, close to Harrogate Town centre but with ample free parking within the hotel grounds. The building is Victorian and in it's heyday was certainly a very grand hotel. It has a beautiful entrance which was known as the winter garden when it was built. As is the case with many grand hotels of old, the Cairn retains it's slightly faded grandeur, which all adds to it's character and charm. Our room, on the first floor, looked out over a back lawn and garden and was very peaceful. The bed was comfy, however the pillows could do with replacing as they were slightly lumpy. A slight irritant were the small lights on three of the light switches, they lit up the room far too much once we put the the lights out for bed. I had to buy some black tape to cover them for our second night. The bathroom was a good size with a powerful shower over the bath. Breakfast is served in a large room with beautiful, original stained glass windows. A good selection of cereals, yogurts, fresh fruit and cooked breakfast, very enjoyable. All the staff we encountered were polite, friendly and helpful. We love the Cairn Hotel and we will be back!
Lumpy pillows. Small permanent light on three light switches.

I've stayed at the Cairn 3 times this year, usually package deals e.g. Burns night and have stayed regularly for several years, so know what to expect. Rooms are comfortable, breakfasts excellent and the staff, whether on the bar or elsewhere are always friendly and helpful. One always comes over for a chat late at night, if it's quiet and 2 others remembered myself and my colleague from our last visit - you don't often get that! The Cairn is an elegant survivor from a previous age and that's a large part of it's charm. It's not "up to date" or full of gimmicks - you just feel like you get a big warm hug when walking through the front door. I have stayed in other hotels in town (although not recently) and you just don't get the same ambience. In addition, the car park is large and free - unlike some hotels in town who have the nerve to charge!
Nothing to say here

Single room and bed, but quite spacious, with comfy chairs, and plenty of hanging and drawer storage. l particularly appreciated the great view from the 2nd floor front window. Good bathroom and shower, but a long hot water run - good and hot when it came through - allow 2 or 3 minutes. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. Didn't take the breakfast as I had to be on duty early.
Free WiFi not useable in my room. Other than the main channels: BBC/ITV/Channel 4 & 5, TV reception broke up a lot. I suspect its location-related.

Normally stay elsewhere when visiting Harrogate but thought try somewhere different. Single room probably big enough to take a double bed. Staff pleasant and courteous. Didn't have a good look round hotel as I had plans for the evening and didn't arrive until 7. Bedroom was cold but I soon sorted that. Wallpaper was looking tired and coming away and bedroom not as clean as others I have stayed in but not dirty. Beautiful building would certainly call in again to explore. Breakfast couldn't fault and first class service by all the staff. They certainly have the correct staff working there.

Staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel was amazing in its size and lavish decor. The bed was very comfortable.
Short on sockets in the room. A fridge would have been nice because I had some food and milk drinks left over from a picnic, and I had to throw them away. The shower took a long time to heat up, but was ok eventually. The toast was nice at breakfast but I was asked if I wanted oit as soon as I sat down. It arrived with my tea, but when I eventually got my cooked breakfast, the toast was cold. A toaster would have been better so customers could serve them selves. There was a long queue for the cooked breakfast, whic was delicious, but there sould have been more people serving.

Whenever I visited Harrogate I always thought the Cairn looked a bit run down and didn’t fancy staying there but this time it was the best deal so we booked and now my impression of it is entirely different, our room was quite large even although it was only a ‘classic size’ so I took that to be basic but it was lovely, very comfortable and warm, quiet, a bath and shower over the bath, plenty of hot water, tea and coffee facilities, tv, we didn’t have a great view but we weren’t bothered, breakfast was great, the usual cereal and fruit etc plus a fry up if you wanted, the location is good you can walk into town quite easily. Its a lovely big old victorian hotel with bags of character.
The room was very warm uncomfortably so at times, the heat seemed to be coming from under floor heating or pipes so we couldn’t really control it.
