We were celebrating a special family event so we wanted everything to go well - and it did! The location was excellent- close to the town and facilities. The view over the River Wye was beautiful. The staff were amazing - so friendly and obliging. The hotel was warm and cosy - just what you want in February! The breakfast and food was very good too. All together a wonderful weekend. The onsite carpark was another bonus.
Everything was very good but my husband found the staircase a challenge. We were only able to make one cup of tea so a few more teabags and refreshment supplies in our room would have been welcome.

Breakfast was good every day, lovely choices on the menu and the poached eggs were especially good. Room was large and spacious, and the bed really comfortable. the view across the river was superb. dinner, again was great, all the food was freshly prepared and arrived looking great. we were even able to make little swaps and changes to the set dishes to meet our likes and dislikes.
the only thing that wasn't great was the number of stairs in the building to get to our room, but a very helpful member of staff showed us a simpler way with less stairs. much appreciated.

Superb location in the heart of Ross with everything a short walk away. Due to scaffolding outside the building views were restricted of the beautiful surrounding area and river Wye, but I was forewarned of this prior to my arrival. The breakfasts were truly first rate with good choice and tasty local produce, thank you Carol for looking after me with a smile and cheery words. My mattress was a little on the soft side for my own preference but room service was spot on and the whole place had a wonderful 'old coaching inn' feel about it with all the necessary modern accoutrements, though I found the WiFi patchy at best. I was made to feel very welcome and would definitely want to stay there again.
WiFi could certainly be improved upon.

All staff, very pleasant & welcoming. We've returned for a few years now. Previous times staff have also been pleasant but this year seemed, more customer facing, I don't know if it has been a particular drive this year but definitely paid off. All credit to the staff!! Breakfast is good - add black pudding please?!
Bed is comfy but don't like the pillows would prefer some pillow options. As returning customer had same problem last year. This year abandoned pillow altogether too high, not ideal either but better than cricked neck. Want a shallow pillow as well to sleep on to avoid cricked neck.

I stayed in the older part of the hotel this visit, in room 3, it's a really nice option as the rooms on this side of the hotel have really good reception on O2. I loved room 8 particularly, it has a cute view and a quirky staircase to the bathroom. The beds and cushions are so comfortable. The staff are friendly and helpful. Sally and Carol are total stars and go above and beyond to ensure a great stay. Most of my trips recently have been for meetings in Hay-on-Wye but I would rather stay at the Royal, where the food is great and the welcome is generous, and drive to my meetings fresh and happy. Highly recommend a stay here.

This super friendly hotel is right in the centre of Ross has parking and beautiful views over the river. We had a double river view room which also has a sofa and coffee table where you can sit and read a book or just admire the view. It also has a little balcony. We ate in the hotel both nights and the food was delicious on both nights. Breakfast was amazing too with lots of choice to suit all requirements. The absolute bonus of this hotel are the staff. Each member of staff we spoke to were so friendly and helpful and credit to the hotel. Thanks for a wonderful stay Diolch

The staff were extremely helpful, cheerful and made us feel very welcome. The food was superb, both evening meal and breakfast- service excellent and food produced quickly. The room was spacious, light and a pleasant temperature. Loved the view of the river and the small balcony. Although we didn't need it on this occasion, as we only stayed one night, it was nice to have a bath as well as a shower. We loved the fact that The Royal is sited in a beautiful location and yet was just a few minutes walk from the pretty town of Ross on Wye.
We would have liked the use of a more comfortable and quiet lounge area to enjoy our glass of wine before bed time. As it was we were surrounded by rather boisterous young van drivers understandably letting off steam and enjoying themselves after a hard day's work- we didn't feel comfortable and so hastily drank our wine and went to our room.

Beautiful position high over the river. Tasteful decor. Lovely food, although pricey. Staff were friendly & helpful.
NO LIFT! It needs to be pointed out on the hotel's website that because there is no lift, that it is unsuitable for guests with limited mobility. Our room was on the top floor up two flights of (windy) stairs. My mother who is 83 could not handle them. Consequently, we had to take a room downgrade (fewer steps) so instead of looking at our beautiful view of the river, we had a view of a fire escape! It was only for one night but if we'd been staying longer, it could have been an issue

Staff were friendly and helpful. The food was delicious. The bed was better than we expected! The location had the best views compared with other places we have stayed. The town was lovely but we shall be returning for another stay because we didn't manage to do the walk along the river. It must be lovely for my husband to want to return to the same place!! The hotel was in a great location and easy to find, we visited other places and found our way back easily. Oh and the bath was lush and the hair wash was great quality. Room service was very efficient, top ups left even when we weren't there, I thought that was very considerate. Overall a really lovely experience, we are looking forward to going back soon.
We were able to hear the television in the room next door.

The hotel is in a perfect location and gives stunning views over the landscape. Whilst some of the hotel is dated the location is great, the staff are excellent (especially Carol) and the rooms are comfortable. The bar has an excellent choice of ales (and gins) and a the food is consistently good (although the menu seems to be the same as all Green King hotels which is a shame) All in all it is great value and provides a great base for exploring the area
I am being picky here but we found the wifi was a little unreliable at times, the room was a good size but there wasn't enough hanging space and there was no chest of draws to put stuff away.
