The George In Rye Rye, United Kingdom Spoiled at The George November 2024 My experience was stellar, from beginning to end. The front of house staff were kind, smily, and very helpful showing me to my room. I stayed in #37, and it was perfect for me. My little oasis included a huge comfy bed, two chill out chairs with sweet views out the window, and a sunken bathroom with a spacious tub and yummy shower with great water pressure. All immaculately cleaned when I arrived. This was a weekend trip to replace, recharge, and enjoy bonfire night. All went better than expected! So fun! I was also spoiled by the restaurant staff when I arrived by having the George cheeseburger for a late lunch meal, and looked forward to the eggs Benedict for breakfast. I was seated immediately, and treated very well by the highest of customer service standards. Thanks again for making great memories, a well needed rest, and a luxury experience. Anyone who doesn’t see the charm and the excellence in this hotel, and their staff, is either blind or arrogant. I look forward to bringing my grown children back with me next time.

The property was beautifully decorated, and our room was clean and spacious. The staff were so friendly and couldn’t do any more to make us feel so welcome. Even the other guests/punters were friendly and chatty. We loved that they left a bed and water bowl in the room for our dog to use. Perfectly situated within the town as well. This was a wonderful quick staycation for my mum and I and we can’t wait to come back with friends and family.

The only thing I would say is that I do feel that the dog supplement was quite high for a one night stay compared to other places I’ve stayed. I would rather have paid a higher refundable deposit and a smaller supplement. It also wasn’t clear on the booking.com page that you do need to select a specific room type to accommodate a dog.

We had a small but comfortable room (10) which was very quiet. We liked the radio playing quietly when we arrived! We liked the bathroom - plenty of space to put things (which is a bugbear of mine). Roll top bath with enough hot water available to fill it. Good drawer space in the bedroom. The hotel generally is a labyrinth, historic and creaky, but very tastefully decorated. Lampshades in particular. We were lucky to discover a first floor sitting room which we had to ourselves in the early evening when it was quite crowded downstairs in the bar. We liked the chap behind the bar who we chatted with when we got back from our evening out.

Inadequate/flimsy wardrobe and no hooks in the room to hang wet coats or even the space to drape them somewhere. At breakfast the coffee was lukewarm and we had to ask for another. Eggs Royale also lukewarm and egg whites (rather than just the yoke) very runny. Not to so bad we felt the need to complain but not great either. Desk staff were helpful but a bit loud & 'familiar'; it didn't feel like an upmarket hotel from that point of view, more like a Travelodge!

The overall style of the hotel is very nice, its very welcoming and comfortable. The room was nice. The bed was very comfortable and the bath was huge!

I would stay here again but I would not have the breakfast. It was terrible. My partner, who is vegan, had a vegan breakfast, the "sausages" looked like they had been steamed, and there was boiled potatoes sliced up (same as my hash below). I had spinach and potato hash, with mushrooms and a fried egg. Everything on the plate felt like it had been steamed, (microwaved?), warmed up from earlier and then smothered in butter. The potato were just chopped up boiled potatoes, not a slight touch of roasting. The restaurant wasnt even that busy. It was low quality compared to the rest of the experience of the hotel.

The room was so luxurious and beautiful. The bed was exceptionally comfortable and we both slept so well. We loved the huge bath tub too. The full breakfast in the morning was delicious and the staff were friendly and couldn't do enough for us! We really wanted to stay longer. It is also a perfect location in Rye to wander the quaint, historical streets.

The only issue was because we were on the ground floor, we could hear the people above us as they walked around their room and used their shower but I am a light sleeper anyway so used ear plugs and all was OK.

Location is excellent. Historic building, beautifully refurbished in a quirky, sympathetic modern take on country house style. Hotel is full of narrow passages, it’s fun to explore where they lead and spot beautiful architectural features. The beds really comfortable, the water pressure excellent, lovely Ren toiletries. The staff were charming and the food at dinner terrific - the melt in the mouth chateaubriand was a particular highlight, a good breakfast offering.

There weren’t enough surfaces in bedroom to put things down on, i.e. no dressing table. It would be easy to get lost in the hotel as it is a bit of a maze, so it would have been helpful to have a porter show us to our room and point out features eg kettle and cups on side but tea and coffee in bottom of wardrobe - why?? No parking at hotel, steep walk up from local car park (only £2.50 for 24 hours) so drop bags off before parking. People with mobility issues should mention this when booking as lots of steep, curving stairs and very narrow passages in parts of hotel - not a problem for us.

Beautiful established building with superior decor and well-appointed. Breakfast lovely and staff - especially breakfast team - very friendly.

If a hotel accepts dogs then it should charge a reasonable fee for bringing one. £50 is in no way reasonable - this hotel is therefore in no way ‘dog-friendly’. They even tried to add £1 charitable contribution to the £50 - sheer impudence. Also, main bar lady is one of those people that makes you nervous for her - more than one customer waiting for a drink and she was in a blind panic.

Breakfast was great! They hadn't organised the room we'd asked for however when show the email were quick to make accommodations for us. The room was beautiful and exceeded expectations. Great location and overall lovely experience.

The hotel hadn't paid close attention to a request made by our boss who booked the room to make arrangements for two single beds. The booking was was through Booking.com. As mentioned however, they were quick to sort this out. Just be weary that it might be better to make specific arrangement via the hotel directly.

- staff very lovely and professional - quality bed and linen. Very comfortable - quality products in the bathroom, which is nice - great location - well insulated room so couldn’t hear noise from courtyard just outside my room - great menu - great breakfast and decent coffee - lovely hotel in the core of town - could stay indoors all day if it were raining all the time

- staff at the restaurant were very nice , just maybe slightly understaffed at diner time? sequencing of food order and drinks didn’t quite work well. - there was a beaming light from the courtyard going into the room from a window, which couldn’t let me sleep. I mentioned that to the reception and it looks like some technical issue that night only, which is a shame, but staff was very apologetic also as other guests mentioned the same. So likely a one off issue.

All of it, we have stayed many times and The George never disappoints - evening food great, exceptional mussels in a fragrant sauce, oysters and whatever my daughter had. Wine good but bar ran out of Trebbiano so we had Viognier instead. Breakfast always a treat and the staff were a joy. Will be visiting again. Particularly love the decor including the porthole in the shower and the shell grotto ceiling in the ladies room. A wonderful place, our treat pre-Christmas.
