We had such a fantastic time at Base Camp! Steve was a superb host, making sure we had everything we needed, and entertaining us at ‘animal feeding time’ - beautiful native wallabies, pademelons, and Jack the wombat! We had had to divert at short notice, owing to torrential rains and extensive flooding in the Derwent Valley, so Base Camp was a most welcome discovery. Fabulous setting, excellent accommodation, wonderful host family. Tasmanian wilderness within easy commuting distance from Hobart. We got lucky and thoroughly recommend Base Camp!

This is a very different kind of accommodation and is quite a way from New Norfolk and does require you to travel over gravel roads. We used it as a base to visit the Mt Field National Park and it was a reasonable drive each morning. That said, it is a very peaceful place and the wallabies are around from just on dusk. While there are some walks around the property, the land is very steep, so would only suit very fit walkers (no one with bad knees, backs etc.). You need to be entirely self sufficient for catering. There is a free laundry on-site, which is a bonus.
While we were familiar with composting toilets, it could feel strange to people not familiar with them. Water is a precious resource in the area.

This is a stunning property and wonderful accomodation. Environmentally friendly, completely connected to nature, great amenities and wonderful service. It exceeded expectations- the cabin was spacious with everything we needed. Waking up to beautiful nature and animals everywhere- it was stunning. We had planned to go exploring more out of the property but we didn’t need to - there’s loads of space to walk around to immerse yourself in nature. We travelled with a baby and he was accommodated for too. Family run and we felt supported throughout the stay. Such a special place - highly recommend.
Nothing, it was perfect

Our family of four camped at Base Camp for two night, wish we could have stayed a few extra days giving us time to enjoy the walks and relaxing atmosphere. High up in the mountains of Tassie, surrounded by lush bush with an abundance of wild life. A great place to relax, recharge and soak in the beauty of the natural surroundings. Loved the communal kitchen space, hammocks amongst the trees and the evening wander around the property with Andrew the owner as he pointed out the different wild life we were sharing the space with. Would love to return, but next time stay for longer and have days where we had nothing planned but to relax and explore the property.
My only complaint was the showers were often cold, with low pressure, not great if you come back after a day of hiking or riding, cold or wet.

Alana and Steve were so welcoming, and I felt very at home straight away in this beautiful, peaceful place in amongst the trees. The facilities - kitchen and sitting area, and bathrooms, with the bonus of provision of laundry facilities - were all beyond expectations for a campground. The outdoor areas in the campground had hammocks; and picnic tables, with spectacular views, were provided on the great little walking track amongst the trees. The encounter with the animals in the evening was a bonus as you could get up close and experience them in their natural habitat. Alana and Steve are also committed to providing an environment consistent with sustainable principles with an extensive recycling system and water systems in place, and I really appreciated Steve sharing of knowledge about the area and the operation of the property. Highly recommend a visit for some rest and relaxation or as a base to explore surrounding areas🤗

This is such a magical property that is clearly well loved by its owners. The owner are dedicated the both improving the facilities all while maintaining the raw and natural beauty of the land. The bathrooms are clean and very nice. The kitchen is super well stocked with all you need to cook, including a fridge if you need it. The family who owns the place feed the local wildlife in the evening each day. They are super friendly and up for a chat. I will note that the driveway to get in is steep and has some tight corners, so maybe consider contacting the property if you are concerned about it. They are currently in the process of improving the access to the property so things are definetely going to get easier.

This was Glampervanning! The facilities are perfect! A well-equipped kitchen and a very inviting space to spend time in, especially when it’s cold and wet outside. The shower is pure luxury with your own space - a mirror, a hairdryer etc. There’s a nice walk that takes you around the property. It’s a young family-owned business and comes with the hospitality that comes with that. Small-scale tourism with personal connection. They want to do their best with sustainable tourism - for example, they have an exceptional recyclie station, they are willing to take in rescued wildlife for release. I absolutely loved the place.
It’s not that I didn’t like it, but just be aware that there’s a bit of a steep driveway. The old Toyota Hiace made it slowly, but with ease.

The property is really well set up. There is plenty of hot water and the kitchen area is fully enclosed and very serviceable. The host came up to the site to introduce herself as well which was lovely. There is lots of wildlife around - we saw enchidnas, wallabies, pademelons and kangaroos. It’s a bit steep and narrow getting up to the property so you don’t want a vehicle bigger than a van.

It’s very nice that they send an notice of direction of property and check-in information before I get there. Facilities are really good. There is spacious shower room and sufficient kitchenware in the kitchen. In the evening also have feeding little animals time, so interesting. The most of all, it’s eco-friendly camp site that it’s composting toilet. They use pine bark instead of water. All the water come from rain. They also use eco-friendly detergent.

We loved the serenity around the property - the views across the valley were superb, too! Steve and Alannah were great hosts and made us feel really welcome. The facilities were terrific - clean and comfortable toilet/shower block, with a well appointed camp kitchen as well. Best of all, the washing machines and dryers were free to use.
The driveway is steep and the corners are very tight - we managed with a small trailer, but campervans or caravans might have some problems. We had no WiFi or mobile connection - not a big problem for us, as we were looking to detox, but something to be aware of.
