Everything! It was a great stay, especially for one night! We loved that there was a private bath and there were no reservations needed to go! The onsen was wonderful and we would definitely come again! The inn had everything we needed and more, we wished we stayed longer in order to experience more of the area and yamagaso!

One thing is that we didn't get any food included with the booking and wished we did as we were hungry when we got there! It would be good if we were warned a shorter stay meant no meals ;u;

Yamagaso feels like an oasis among much larger onsen hotels in Hakone. When you walk through the door, it feels like you're stepping back in time and are immediately relaxed by the beautiful small buildings and peaceful gardens on the property. We stayed in the Chouji "room", which was actually a stand-alone suite/home that was not connected to other buildings. Chouji was also larger than we expected with multiple small rooms, surrounded by the garden on 2-3 sides. It also felt very private because of where it was positioned on the property. One aspect we really loved was our room attendant, Kimiko. She was so sweet, and took incredible care of us. We grew so fond of her and started calling her "grandma kimi" because she made us feel like she was part of our family. I can't say enough positive things about her, and my wife and I miss her after leaving! The other thing that stood out was the food... We did not expect the breakfast and dinners to be so elaborate, and we were blown away by the quality and presentation of everything we ate during our stay. To western travelers: It is very traditional Japanese cuisine so expect to eat things you're not used to. The in-suite onsen was great for 1-person, but my wife and I spent most of our time in the private onsite onsen because it allowed us to bathe and relax together. The water was very warm and crystal clear, and we loved learning and practicing the traditional onsen routine. Overall, we were blown away, and this was definitely the most memorable part of our 2-week honeymoon in Japan. Notes for foreign travelers: Getting to Yamagaso was easy via train. We took the Shinkansen to Odawara, then took a local train to the Hakone-Yumoto Station (20-30 min trip). From there, it's a 15 min walk up the road, or you can take a taxi. There were a couple proficient English speakers there, but don't expect everyone to speak English.

We have no complaints about our stay. The only thing we didn't like was having to leave!

A nice cozy and relaxing location near the Hakone Yumoto train station. Has a shuttle bus to go there and back in the morning and afternoon, however the walk is short and scenic to get there. Staff were exceptionally kind and the Nakai taking care of us was a sweet older lady. The Nakai don't speak much English so be prepared for translate. Rooms were clean and the Yamabuki room was huge with 2 main living rooms, private bath, separate toilet, small kitchen with hot water dispenser and coffee maker. There was also the option to use the private family bath there and also the 2 Senkei public baths.

Very nice ryokan made u feel like u r at home ❤️ good private onsen experience don’t miss it The dinner was traditional Japanese staff which we didn’t know but enjoyed almost all of them Very gentle staff

I texted the property many times nobody answered we should know about check in to the next building before our arrival. Extremely high priced for what is offered. I think half it should be priced about 30% lower so that it’s attractive. Now, while we enjoyed our stay, I believe it was a waste of money.

Our stay at Yamagaso was simply amazing. This was my first time in Japan and I wanted my husband and I to experience a traditional Japanese ryokan. Yamagaso lived up to everything I imagined and beyond. The room was beautiful as were the gardens and meandering paths throughout. Everything was very quiet and private. A perfect romantic getaway. Kimiko and the rest of the staff did everything to ensure a perfect stay for my husband and I as we were celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary. I usually never write reviews, however our stay warranted a review of our fantastic experience of traditional Japanese culture, hospitality and food. Everyone and everything was amazing. We loved the private “family” onsen which we never had a problem accessing, plus the private onsen in our room. The keiseiki meals were amazing. Thank you for a wonderful stay.

The room was absolutely gorgeous, clean and the facilities were a great mixture of historically/culturally accurate but well kept!

They didn’t make it clear that you could take a shuttle directly to their door. Only after I reached out, did we learn about it.

The staff was very helpful and friendly. We had two sets of friends, one that stayed here and another at Senki. We both LOVED the experience. We came during a downpour and the staff were so kind and carried our luggage to our rooms. They even dried the outside of them off. The futons were very comfortable and we all enjoyed our breakfasts. The hot spring options were great! We didn't get to experience the upstairs outdoor one with the view because of the heavy rain though, which was to no fault of their own. They also helped us ship our luggage and call a taxi when we were having trouble with the GO app due to it being a holiday. When we left in the taxi, they helped load our suitcases and they gave us a warm goodbye. Both sets of friends agreed that we highly recommend both here at Yamagaso and Senki.

This was definitely the highlight of my Japan trip. It was an astounding Japanese garden and traditional house in the middle of Hakone. It was quiet and when you go outside you’re greeted by a river and astounding mountain view side. The cabin is quite large and surrounded by ponds and trees. The futon was comfy and the AC was effective driving the cold away. I’m very sad leaving the kotatsu behind. The kaiseki meals are delicious and quite a bit as well I’m always full and haven’t finished the meals.

I loved everything about Yamagosa, It was truly a small slice of authentic japanese paradise. The inner grounds of Yamagosa were beautiful from the gorgeous pathways through the gardens to the trickling sound of water throughout the grounds.. The private onsen bath catered to my partner and I having Tattoos, and the staff went above and beyond to make sure you were comfortable. The perfect place to unwind and relax..... 10 out of 10

There was nothing I didn't like about Yamagosa......

Quiet luxury at its best! Traditional ryokan equipped with all the necessary modern amenities for a comfortable stay. Enshrouded in the womb of nature with the sound of trickling water was the perfect lullaby of one of the best sleeps I’ve ever experienced in my life!

Be careful of the low beams of traditional Japanese residence. Take some getting used to or not at all. Hit my head 7 times within 3 days!
