Fantastic accommodation and the perfect stay for us in Hakonowa. The rooms were self set up but easy to do and the onsen was an amazing extra for our stay. The accommodation is a 10-15 minutes walk from the train/bus station.

There was some confusion on our second night with the request board for the onsen; we added our room sign to a time slot but another guest moved this. It was no fault of the property owner's but if the board is being cleaned it could be a good idea to state what time this will occur to ensure the same doesn't happen yo other guests.

It is an authentic Japanese traditional house back in the day and a bonus to have a beautiful private onsen. It's natural beauty around it gives an additional oomph to its authenticity. Simple minimalist clean and very easy to the eye. One just has to be respectful as walls are thin so to keep quiet at night but it was relatively peaceful as it is also beside the river that comes from Tamadare falls.

The only downside is not having at least a separate common shower. The location of the showers x 2 are all inside the onsen. It could be handy to have a separate one ao as for the late comers like I could have at least a shower and otherwise do not have to wait from the one that is inside the onsen.

Staff was excellent, the bed was amazing and the light breakfast supplied was nice. Onsen was a great spot to relax after a big day, this is your only shower though snd you need to share it with others using a room name system.

The double room was extremely small. The two of us had trouble opening our suitcases in the room (actually on the bed) as there is no space to on the floor. Breakfast is supplied in the room, but had trouble eating it on supplied tray due to space, however they do offer free use of the restaurant space downstairs until 10am. We also had trouble with mosquitoes if we left the window (with screen) slightly ajar, we had to close the window and had no fresh air.

Location was great. Only three rooms so it feels cosy. Straightforward check-in process. Very very very nice room. Slept well. There are some games provided as well in the room if you want to play with friends. Amenities were well-provided. Instructions printed in English were clear. The manager was very nice, when I ran into her.

Wanted to get in touch with the reception team before check-out but the reception team is only available from 11:30am onwards. Note that if you do book last minute, would be ideal to check-in to the hotel when there's staff around so you can check with them for anything if not, it is really unmanned.

Wow, one of the best hotels we have stayed in Japan. The location, the authentic feeling of the Japanese geisha house and the fact that we still felt like the place was clean and beautiful... Just no words.. The Burger restaurant at the first floor made our night with an amazing burger! Almost forgot to mentions that the staff is incredibly nice! Also don't forget the private Onsen!

There might be some smell from the hamburger restaurant at the first floor, but it did not mind us so much since it was just a little bit. Since the house is old, the floor is squicky and walls are pretty much hear trough so mind that when coming here or to any traditional location. Toilet and sink apart from the ones in the Onsen are also shared which is sometimes a hastle. But all worth it...

This was one of my favourite places to stay! The room felt like my own traditional studio and I felt at home right away! Definitely for the people who choose feeling at home in a stay over “hotel-like” luxury, in the best way possible. Hakone Yumoto is beautiful (I recommend staying there, instead of in the more touristy area’s like Moto Hakone. The bathing area was simple but nice and the reservation for it was easy and shared with only 2 other guests.

I was a little worried about the check in process because it was on an iPad where I had to give all my information including passport again, even through a video, which just worried me a bit. Luckily, it was all okay!

Great place! The place itself has a very Japanese feel to it, and is super cozy and clean. As there are only 3 rooms, it makes the experience more intimate and personal. The private onsen is great as well. It is a bit small, but that didn’t bother us. Everyone who worked there was extremely nice, the service was great! They were very welcoming, helpful and kind. It was great to chat with them, as they were just extremely sweet! It made the experience so much better. If you stay here, you should definitely try their burger restaurant located downstairs. Their burgers are amazing. Would 100% recommend this place, everything was very good!

This was probably our favourite place to stay on our trip to Japan. It's situated just over Box Burger, a wonderful burger place with lovely staff who would greet you and wish you well as you head out. We stayed in the room with a double bed with tatami floors. Check in was simple with an onsite iPad (just make sure you fill in the info in advance). And although it is shared bathrooms, it never was an issues. But the highlight was the private Onsen. Oh, boy. What a treat to have. It set you up for the day and was the perfect wind-down after a day of exploring. Speaking of exploring, get yourself the Hakone Pass. It covers all transport in the region - buses, Tozan train, ropeway, cablecar, etc. Also, you get discounts at cultural places.

The room was a bit small with two oversized cases, but that's something to consider in the future (pack less). Otherwise, we had a wonderful experience and would recommend to stay longer than 1 night. At least 3 nights to get the full experience of Hakone.

Very charming place and welcoming staff. The burger restaurant just below our room was EXCELLENT. The room is small but there is everything you need : very comfortable futons, pillows and blanket, a coffee table to enjoy your breakfast in your room each morning (coffee, tea, pastries…), even an Apple TV and very nice Yukatas. You can live a ryokan experience without paying too expensive this place is a great value for money. Thank you for welcoming us in this traditional house, we loved it!

The Onsen is not really a traditional onsen, it’s more like a bathtub

Very easy to get to from Hakone Yumoto station. Burgers at the attached restaurant were delicious. Breakfast in the room was also lovely. The onsen is bigger than it looks in the picture, two people can fit in it. Staff were brilliant, spoke excellent English, very helpful. As others have said, the photos of the place don't do it justice, it really is very pretty. Comfortable room (we had a Western style bed).

Not exactly negative things, but worth knowing that there is a shared toilet and sink, but if you want a shower/bath you have to book the onsen (this was easy to do as there are only 3 rooms!). Also worth knowing the room is very small: we had quite a lot of luggage so we had to juggle it around quite a bit to get things out of our suitcases!
