From the moment turning up to the time we left was an amazingly great experience. All of the staff were so professional, polite, friendly and made us so overwhelmingly welcome. Full English breakfast was incredible. Really nice cold fresh orange juice. The outside grounds of the hotel is amazing with a fantastic view of the river with the bridge in the background. The room was extremely spacious and well decorated. Bathroom was modern with an amazing shower. The room was very clean and the TV had so many channels to choose from. We just loved it here. Definitely will be staying here in the future.
I'm thinking hard what not to like about this hotel. I genuinely can't think of anything. Perhaps the windows could be a little bit better noise insulated, however that might change the atmosphere of this wonderful centuries old building. Hearing the owls, the rain and the night time wildlife together with the early morning distant cockerel morning call is something which made our stay so memorable. This place is really something unique. Wonderful.

Beautifully situated by the river. Spacious public rooms. Quaint and clean. In addition to the normal tea/coffee & biscuits there was a jar of sweets and bottled water in the room! The staff were very friendly and helpful, recommending an excellent restaurant over the bridge where the food was outstanding!
Like many places at the moment there was a clear lack of staff - the bar was manned by whoever was on ‘reception’ - a desk by the bar. The room I had was very small, even for single occupancy, and the ‘wardrobe’ was barely accessible with a chair in front of it - which couldn’t be accessed due to a small table in front of it by the the bed. Thankfully, I was ‘travelling light’ so kept my clothes in my bag or hanging on the shower room door. The cooking facilities were being repaired so a cooked dinner wasn’t available.

Unique amazing humorous and totally professional characters who are the staff in a luxurious historic building in a setting that could be from an Agatha Christie combined with a carry on film. Brandon a new member of staff is an absolute asset..He goes way and above to help guests in any way he can.He will go far with an admirable attitude. Karin and Amanda are a hilarious team and totally brighten the spirit of all the breakfast guests with amazing humour and wonderful service. David is extremely helpful and very genuinely concerned for any problems guests have.Neil is amazing working so hard but will instantly help you.Mark the manager is more than welcoming.A fabulous team Sad to hear Emma has left. She would do anything for anyone with huge enthusiasm and brilliant humour.

We arrived after a very difficult and long journey and was greeted very warmly. Our room was very clean with a lot of amenities and they staff were very friendly. It was great to be able to park outside our room as we had arrived in a classic sports car.
There was a damp patch on the wall and the bathroom door wouldn't shut properly but it didn't effect our stay. We ate at the hotel 2 nights, the first was amazing, great food and excellent service. However the 2nd night wasn't as good because there were 4 items unavailable on the menu and the staff were overstretched serving behind the bar, tending the reception desk and delivering food all whilst a function was happening in another room.

Beautiful period pub! Great location not far from A1/A66. We stopped on route from Scotland. Lovely area near Barnard Castle, great walks around the George which has the river running behind it. Room was clean, warm, newly decorated. Bed was comfortable and towels white and fluffy. All wall sockets had usb charging ports. Nice tv, good selection of coffee tea, water in the room with biscuits. Breakfast was amazing, beautiful eggs royale and cooked english breakfast picked from the menu, coffee and tea. Help yourself croissants, toast, cereal, yoghurts, fruit, bead/toast jams, muffins, fruit juices. Staff very polite and pleasant and the bat was open for a drink when we arrived 9.45pm .

They were having a bit of a computer meltdown when we arrived, but were seated in the bar with a free drink whilst they sorted it out. Then we were given a fantastic big room with a balcony and view over the river - way beyond our selection I think - so thanks to the guys for bothering to take care of us! It's a lovely old original coaching inn right by the Tees, next to a stone river bridge (the old Roman one is a ruin close by). There are annexes so you can probably avoid noise if there is a wedding or event going on - but it was nice and quite midweek and the bar is quite cosy, with good food. Great value and a nice surprise!

I choose the George as it was the cheapest accommodation in the area. The standards far exceeded my expectations. The room was in a separate block and had a private outside area. It was spacious and clean. The hospitality tray included as well as the usual tea, coffee and milk, bottled water, biscuits, hot chocolate, a selection of herbal teas, biscuits and a jar of sweets. On the bed there was left a welcome letter together with a plastic bag enclosing some home made treats. There was also in the cupboard an iron and ironing board as well as a hairdryer. The staff were all very helpful. We had not booked breakfast but were able to in the morning. It was buffet style and the quality and quantity of food was excellent. There were home made pancakes available which I don't think I have seen before on a breakfast buffet. The check out wasn't until 11am so we had time to explore the gardens. The hotel is on the bank of the river Tees
There was nothing not to like

Stopped at this property on our way from Scotland to Scarborough to break the journey up for the kids. Property was clean and beds were comfortable. We had 2 rooms (7 people) located in the cottages, just to the left of the hotel. They were lovely with lovely small touches like a sweet jar, tea and coffee and toiletries. Had 2 double beds for us and the two kids and the other room was a double and a single. Staff were lovely and friendly. We ate in the hotel and the food was amazing! We got a real bargain considering what we paid for the night. Highly recommend this place!

The hotel and staff were great and top value for money. My issue was there was a 18th birthday party on and I think my room was above the lady’s toilets. Continuous banging of doors and screaming girls wasn’t easy to get an early night in for an early 5am start for work the next morning, after a long 6 hour drive up from Southampton I just needed some quietness. I understand it’s a pub and maybe a little noisy so it was my bad really but this is the only reason I gave a 9 and not a 10. Just something to bear in mind for future stays. The free biscuits, cakes and chocolates made in the kitchen where a really nice touch. Would definitely stay again

Having seen the price of hotels go up by ridiculous amounts ( Prem Inn etc ) as a company we have looked for cheaper alternatives , blown away by the value for money at The George and is why it’s been given a 10 ,a quirky old building 1500s with lots of interesting features . Food was excellent as was the service and at a fair price and staff friendly , a sit by the water while having a beer is always good as well .Surprised to have not just freeview but a fire stick with Netflix, prime etc all working ,had a good nights sleep , lots of wee extras as well , jar of sweets in room .Would definitely stay again
