We booked the Royal Hotel as we needed to make an overnight visit to the area to see a relative who is seriously ill. The location was perfect for us and from the moment we arrived our every need was catered for. The Receptionist was warm, welcoming and exceptionally helpful. Conveniently, we were able to park in the car park immediately in front of the property. Our room was large, well furnished with every comfort - (I think we were ‘upgraded’ … thank you!) - warm and comfortable, with everything we needed, including a large en-suite bathroom with plenty of hot water, great shower and large bath. Breakfast was fabulous, including a full English option. The hotel is reminder of great British seaside holidays of the past. If you’re offended by the odd bit of chipped paint and a slightly shabby chic vibe, it’s not for you, but if you value character, comfort, location and excellent service, then this place is a gem. Highly recommended … help keep these wonderful hotels alive!

Wi-Fi was poor but it’s a large, old building.

Visit with my family, from train station to hotel its a bit walk but when you reached at the hotel the location must bring smile on your face. fantastic location. Initially I had an issue (personal) but then quite unexpectedly Matilda's Mum [cant remember her name] help me and it was such a nice gesture from her. Both me and my wife was really happy with her service and have to admit when she give her own opinion which actually goes with real customer service definition where other person put themselves in your shoe. Apart from her few other things i think would be better the dinning area lighting and carpet. Its quite dark in general. Breakfast with the same menu could be more appealing if displayed in different manner. Shops are all around so getting food or drinks is quite convenient. UBER EATS works which is a life saver for me, as the place im living its not work as it work most of the places in UK.

We really enjoyed our stay at The Royal. A warm welcome & our room was large & very clean overlooking the main square. The Hotel has its own walkway to the promenade. The small lift is great to use if you struggle with stairs. Very convenient location for stepping out to restaurants, bars (The Vaults next door is good) & just minutes walk to the Playhouse Theatre. The car park has an overflow section, there were enough spaces even for a very busy weekend. We would not hesitate to re-book for any future stay. Staff were lovely & more than ready to help with anything.

Breakfast could have been included in the price maybe. Although you would be spoilt for choice to find breakfast locally- even a Gregg's across the square.

Beautiful hotel in fabulous location opposite pier with parking and lovely breakfast too. Beautiful room with stunning view across the pier and very helpful staff

There was a beautiful window in our room but there was a real draft blowing in which also made quite a noise. Didn't really bother us much as it was August and warm but it was a very windy day we were there. Also the waitress at breakfast asked if I would like to order toast later after the full breakfast to which I said Yes but she never returned for me to order it. All the same it was a lovely breakfast and lovely waitresses and I would love to return

Staff - they were all friendly and polite and were eager to help in any way they could. Breakfast was very good, Sunday Lunch was AMAZING! Room very comfortable and a reasonable size. Location was perfectly situated for our visit to The Playhouse Theatre, town and seafront - although it was a bit on the windy side!

Our room was at the front of the hotel overlooking the Italian Gardens, at 5.30am the council began pressure washing the square. As we sleep with open windows it woke us up! The over bath shower was a rainfall type which unfortunately I don't like to use, but very good all the same.

Great location and friendly staff. Also good is that they have a good sized carpark that is free for guests. What we really liked was the restaurant. The evening meal was excellent and a bottle of wine wasn't over priced. Breakfast was buffet style (Saturday morning) and was a really good breakfast. Quality ingredients and well cooked. Room was ok but a bit on the small size - but it was as shown on the website.

The only way to shut the door on exiting the room was to 'slam it' shut. Hope we didn't disturb other guests. Also, depending on the location of the room, there could be noise from local pubs. With only single glazing you can't 'shut the noise out.

We couldn’t fault the staff. All very friendly, helpful & efficient. We understand they couldn’t have been more accommodating arranging our friends wedding. The room was clean & comfortable & breakfast was excellent. The location was perfect as we attended a wedding in the hotel during our stay

No reflection on the staff but the hotel is a bit tired & could do with a refresh. The shower screen in the bathroom leaked & resulted in water on the bathroom floor. The bed was a bit creaky! If the hotel was less tired it would have felt like better value.

Loved that when we got there early they said our room was ready and we were able to check in 2 hours early. This was great as it was pouring down! Also was nice that Housekeeping came everyday to see if we needed anything. This is a treat since Covid as we were only staying for the weekend.

Room service would have been lovely. Although the bar staff were fine with us taking our drinks back to our room. Also some voiles/net curtains would be nice as we had to keep closing the curtains as our room looked out to the road.

Finding the hotel and parking were so easy Upon entering the reception team made us feel really welcome, the room key was ready and the whole process to check in was superb. The decor is clean and modern, the room really clean and we had a fabulous view of the town square, the bathroom was spotless and the bed really comfortable. The cooked buffet breakfast was really tasty

The hotel is locates next to quite a few bars, if your room is facing the town it could be noisy late at night. Breakfast choices are a little limited with no menu for cooked to order items, and the small quantity of food on the buffet meant the you were waiting for replenishment most mornings. Our room had 4 beds, but one chair and a small dressing table, there was space for a couple of chairs and small table which would be more practical.

Closeness to town beach and playhouse. Lovely lady on reception to check us in and out smoothly. Good tea and coffee and biscuits in room. Comfortable bed pillows and bedding.

Not being able to get into see the show. We were told it was a private function and it wasn't. We should have been informed it was on we could have booked seats then. No beans for breakfast. Toast like warm bread but otherwise quite good. Key card didn't work a couple of times but was redone for us politely but just annoying late at night.
